Position

What You Will Be Doing:

We are seeking an experienced Drainage Engineer with strong expertise in UK Flood Risk Management (FRM), Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS), Flood Risk Assessments (FRA), Natural Flood Management (NFM), drainage strategy development and Flood Risk Activity Permits (FRAPs).

You will contribute to the delivery of flood resilience and drainage solutions across public and private sector projects across UK and Ireland, supporting infrastructure schemes, development planning and flood alleviation initiatives.

This role is ideal for someone with solid UK flood risk experience who is looking to take the next step within a growing and forward-thinking water team.

What you will be doing:
• Deliver Flood Risk Assessments (FRAs) in accordance with UK planning policy and regulatory guidance including developed surface water drainage strategies and SuDS in accordance with CIRIA C753 and Non-Statutory Technical Standards.
• Develop flood risk management strategies for development and infrastructure projects.
• Design drainage and SuDS schemes from concept through to detailed design and construction support including Natural Flood Management (NFM) and nature-based flood solutions including:

  • Greenfield runoff assessments and discharge rate calculations.
  • Attenuation systems including basins, ponds, tanks and swales.
  • Below-ground drainage networks and conveyance systems.
  • Drainage layouts, levels strategies and technical approval drawings.
  • Coordinating drainage design with highways, earthworks and utilities.
  • Integration into biodiversity, public realm and landscape design.
  • Climate change allowances.

• Prepare and manage Flood Risk Activity Permit (FRAP) applications and regulator engagement.
• Liaise with Local Planning Authorities, Lead Local Flood Authorities (LLFAs), the Environment Agency and other stakeholders.
• Undertake hydraulic modelling of surface water drainage systems working with the Cork based modelling team when required.
• Support planning applications, technical approvals and discharge of conditions.
• Ensure compliance with current UK flood risk legislation, standards and CDM Regulations.
• Flood defence and alleviation design responsibility - Transform a preliminary high-level option into a comprehensive design for planning and then detailed design for construction mainly working as a drainage specialist member of a wider team.
• Working as member of project team to deliver quality services to Clients.
• The successful individual must be able to work to tight deadlines within a Quality Management System.
• Prepare and deliver technical presentations to market SUDS expertise to wide variety of clients.

Requirements

What You Bring:
• Significant experience of co-ordination and managing the design of drainage solutions to include SuDS and surface water drainage strategies.
• Strong understanding of UK Flood Risk Management, including Flood and Water Management Act 2010, NPPF & Planning Practice Guidance (Flood Risk & Coastal Change), EA climate change allowances, CIRIA C753 SuDS Manual, Non-Statutory Technical Standards for SuDS.
• Experience working with Environment Agency (EA), Lead Local Flood Authorities (LLFAs), Local Planning Authorities.
• Experience of working directly with clients in a specialist technical capacity supporting Project Managers and Directors.
• Familiar with and capable of delivering Flood Risk Assessments/Activity Permits, Flood Consequence Assessments and Surface Water Drainage Strategies in compliance with strict quality criteria.
• Project Management skills to include contract administration of surveys, site investigations and other 3 party inputs to the design process.
• Establishing requirements and making design decisions.

Skills and knowledge
• Degree qualified in Civil Engineering field.
• 5-7 years post-graduate experience with at least 5 years involvement in Drainage and Flood Risk Management.
• Chartered status or equivalent preferred, but candidates that can aim to achieve chartership within 12 months will also be considered.
• Experience using industry-standard software such as:

  • InfoDrainage/MicroDrainage/Causeway Flow
  • TUFLOW / Flood Modeller / HEC-RAS (desirable)
  • AutoCAD and/or Civil 3D (desirable)
  • GIS software (desirable)

• Ability to interpret flood mapping, model outputs and hydrological data.
• Strong technical reporting and communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
• Strong background in compliance with health & safety design regulations.
