Senior Design Manager

Building North West

An opportunity has arisen for a Senior Design Manager to join the team at Galliford Try.

Ideally, you will based in or around North West of England and will have the opportunity to travel across multiple sites/projects in the Region.

What you will be doing:

As Senior Design Manager you will oversee the management and control of the design process and design team, as well as the supervision of Design/ Assistant Design Managers to ensure the design solutions meet project(s) specification and budget.

  • Manage the relationship with the client, subcontractors, and design team to develop, deliver and resolve any design queries on bid(s)/ project(s) that meet the projects specification, programme and budget.
  • Responsibility for the management and development of designated Design/ Assistant Design Managers with responsibility for monitoring design performance on projects your team members are working on.
  • Select and/or assess for competency a suitable design team for project or if novated undertake suitable checks.
  • Obtain and assess the fee proposals to develop and manage a robust project Fee Schedule for inclusion in the tender submission and approve and manage fees through the duration of the project.
  • Develop & compile documentation for inclusion within the contractors proposals.
  • Develop relevant documentation in conjunction with bid/ project team for inclusion in Appointments.
  • Chair design team meetings and workshops as appropriate to manage the design development process
  • Develop innovative design solutions with the design team and supply chain including the production of high-quality value engineering solutions.
  • Manage and maintain the Design Risk and Opportunities during bid(s)/ project(s) minimising risk and maximising gross profit.
  • Lead negotiations with the customer for the design solution retained at the end of the bidding process.
  • Work alongside the preconstruction and project teams to ensure design portion subcontract enquiries are robust and responses provide a value for money compliant solution
  • Review the design on an ongoing basis, identifying potential interface, buildability, and coordination issues, resolving them with the design and project team and specialist subcontractors
  • Maintain and develop relationships with existing and new consultants to review potential future opportunities for both parties.
  • Ensure all projects are delivered in accordance with ERs, CP's & Statutory requirements and all parties are aware of their obligations under statute

About You:

  • Significant experience of working as a Design Manager on a variety of routine and complex projects.
  • Experience of line management
  • Experience of leading and managing a Design Management team.
  • Degree in Architecture/Civil Engineering or Construction Management.
