Senior Design Engineer

Responsibilities
- Lead the development, delivery and technical assurance of temporary and permanent works designs from initial brief through to issued construction information, ensuring compliance with BS 5975, Eurocodes, and relevant UK Health & Safety legislation.
- Produce, review and check design calculations, drawings, reports, and designer's risk registers, ensuring designs are safe, buildable, economical and appropriate for site conditions.
- Manage multiple concurrent design tasks, including prioritisation, programme alignment, coordination with project teams and communication of design requirements to stakeholders.
- Act as the primary interface between designers, project teams, clients, and supply-chain specialists to ensure coordinated, timely and compliant design delivery.
- Undertake site visits to assess conditions, provide engineering guidance, review temporary works implementation and advise on permanent works buildability, and risk mitigation.
- Provide leadership, mentoring and technical guidance to junior engineers, graduates and technicians, supporting professional development and ensuring high technical standards.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of design processes, BIM/CDE integration, digital engineering practices and standardised temporary works solutions.
- Support design governance by ensuring accurate categorisation of temporary works, appropriate levels of design checking, and production of required assurance documentation in line with company procedures.
Experience required
- Minimum 7-10 years' experience in temporary works design, including falsework, formwork, excavation support, propping, access platforms, crane bases, and other structural or geotechnical temporary works.
- Demonstrable experience delivering designs across tender and construction stages, with strong understanding of buildability, construction sequencing, site constraints and commercial impacts.
- Experience producing and checking detailed engineering calculations, technical reports and design risk assessments in accordance with CDM Regulations and industry standards.
- Strong understanding of Eurocodes and British Standards.
- Proven experience coordinating within multidisciplinary project teams, external designers and specialist subcontractors, with ability to manage stakeholder expectations.
- Background in both site and design office environments (client, contractor or designer roles beneficial).
- Experience leading, mentoring or developing engineering team members.
Qualifications/skills/CSCS Cards/Tickets required
Qualifications
- Degree (BEng/MEng) in Civil or Structural Engineering (or equivalent).
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) or nearing chartership with ICE or IStructE.
Skills & Technical Competencies
- Proficiency with structural analysis and modelling software (e.g., AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Robot, Revit, InfraWorks, Navisworks).
- Strong understanding of BIM and CDE systems
- Working knowledge of CDM Regulations, H&S legislation and temporary works procedures.
- Ability to produce high-quality drawings, specifications and technical documentation to required standards.
- Excellent communication, collaboration and stakeholder management skills.
Required Training / Certifications
- CSCS card (professionally qualified level).
- Full UK driving licence.
