Senior Design Engineer

This job is brought to you by Jobs/Redefined, the UK's leading over-50s age inclusive jobs board.

About Us

We are Mous. People deserve tech and lifestyle products that are fit for purpose, perform as promised and allow them to be their best. So we are building the go-to brand refreshingly focused on product so people can have just that. We have consistently built our in-house expertise and spent millions in research and development on our relentless pursuit to making the best products possible. Over the past ten years we have flipped the tech accessory market on its head, raising the standards and people's expectations. We've made cases that can protect phones dropped from cranes, engineered magnetic accessory ecosystems before MagSafe even launched, partnered with Google to make super thin cases, developed impact materials and waterproof constructions to make backpacks that confidently protect laptops and we're only just getting started!

We're creating products that empower people to be their best, whether they're on a wild adventure or commuting through the city. No matter what your everyday life looks like you can trust our products to remove frustrations, expand your experiences and help you to live without limits.

About the Role

As a Senior Design Engineer at Mous, you'll take a leading role in the design and development of multiple R&D projects within our cases and screen protectors team. Your extensive experience will allow you to make an immediate impact, as you oversee key aspects of product development from concept to manufacture.

About You

We've got a project with your name on it, so you'll need to hit the ground running and rapidly get to grips with our core product development processes. You'll be very "hands-on" in this role, and we'll look to you to flex your technical, creative, and leadership muscles to solve a wide range of engineering problems.

You'll work closely with our talented team of Design Engineers, Industrial Designers, and our production team in China. While you'll be eager to share your knowledge and mentor junior team members, you'll also continue learning from others as we strive to deliver the best possible outcomes for our loyal customers.

Key responsibilities:

    • Leading the design and development of multiple R&D projects for our cases and screen protectors, from initial research through to final production.
    • Detailed project management: working closely with multiple stakeholders across the business to ensure that key deadlines are hit.
    • Managing supplier relationships: from identifying new suppliers to maintaining strong partnerships with existing ones to ensure efficient production.
    • Collaborating closely with our production team to ensure the seamless launch of new products with a focus on quality and manufacturability.

Now, here's what we need from you in your first three months with us:

    • Develop a strong sense of what makes a Mous product, a Mous product.
    • Lead the design of multiple projects, taking ownership of prototyping, CAD (SolidWorks), and all other associated development tasks to meet the expectations of Project and Category Leads.
    • Drive continuous improvement of our existing processes to boost efficiency and product quality.
    • Get to grips with our prototyping capabilities in-house (UK & China) and outside the company (UK & CN-based Prototypes), often creating cost-effective prototypes in short timeframes.

Sounds good? This is our forecast for six months to a year:

    • Further develop your ability to work with the Mous product development process to ensure the high quality of product design is executed consistently.
    • Actively pursue multiple avenues to achieve the product specification, working in a logical and consistent manner to make an inherently unpredictable activity, such as product design, as predictable as possible.
    • Build strong working relationships with our China-based Production team, to ensure the release of a high quality (minimal product failure rate & high yield production rate) product on time.
    • Use your strong communication skills to update Project and Category Leads on the progress of projects and tasks, and our international manufacturers to ensure amendments and improvements to prototypes are completed on time and to spec.
    • Use your solid analytical and presentation skills to effectively present key data and insights to key stakeholders including our CEO.
    • Use your excellent time management abilities to prioritise daily tasks in accordance with overarching company goals.

It's a super exciting time to join the Mous family, and we're looking for the very best to come aboard our team. Here's what we need from you:

    • You'll have a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design or Manufacturing Engineering under your belt.
    • At least 5 years' Design Engineering experience with a sound knowledge of product development through prototyping and testing.
    • Extensive experience in working the entire production process: from early stage design to manufacture, with multiple parts and assemblies.
    • Strong understanding of different testing methodology with the ability to communicate product attributes using data.
    • In-depth knowledge of injection moulding and key DFM features needed to create a mass manufacturable product, as well as other manufacturing processes such as thermoforming, CNC, sheet metal bending, and extrusion.
    • A knowledge of various materials from thermoplastics, composites, to metals.
    • Demonstrable evidence of managing and delivering design solutions on time, to specification and within cost and budget parameters.
    • Experience evaluating concepts based on spec points.
    • Proficient using Excel with the ability to produce complex reports.
    • Highly competent in CAD Modelling, ideally using SolidWorks.
    • Commercially aware and detail oriented whilst striving for continuous improvement.

We're not asking for the world (we promise!), but here are some nice-to-haves:

    • Previous experience working on tech accessory products - if its phone related, even better!
    • Prior experience working directly with manufacturers - especially those overseas.
    • Knowledge and experience working with Surface Modelling.
