An opportunity has arisen within the Royal National Ear, Nose & Throat Hospital & Eastman Dental Hospital for a Band 6 Dental Technician for the planning, design and fabrication of a range of oral / dental appliances for patients referred to the hospital, using both analogue and CAD/CAM techniques. The successful applicant will be primarily based at the Eastman Dental Institute Laboratory at the Rockefeller Building, working alongside university colleagues. A close working relationship is expected with the wider multi-disciplinary clinical teams to deliver a high quality, effective and efficient service.
Main duties of the job
Provision of a wide range of (primarily) removable laboratory work of a high quality is paramount, including implant-retained prostheses, with work ranging from highly complex prosthodontic/ multidisciplinary cases to conventional dentures and simple on-the-day additions and repairs, as well as diagnostic planning aids and stents. Experience in CAD CAM technology and workflows would be advantageous.
Candidates should be committed to delivering work of a high standard, in line with the Division's expectations as well as meeting turnaround times/ deadlines and ensuring effective and efficient service delivery. The candidate must be able to work effectively as part of a large team understand the importance of meeting deadlines; and be able to communicate effectively with patients and clinical colleagues. They will also require the confidence to work independently and partake in service development.
They should also be comfortable working in a teaching environment and partaking in discussion / training for junior staff regarding cases where required as well as treatment planning discussions.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:
• Achieving a consistently high standard in the production/ manufacture/ repair of precision and highly complex prosthodontic and dental implant supported devices.
• Aiding the planning and design of restorative appliances, in conjunction with Consultants, Clinical Staff & trainees, and attending joint consultations at the Eastman Dental Hospital when required.
• Planning, co-ordinating and prioritising daily personal workload to meet laboratory deadlines and assisting with managing workflow.
• Fabrication of removable prostheses to include: cobalt chrome and acrylic partial dentures and obturators; complete dentures (conventional and implant retained including manufacture of implant bars and use of pre-formed implant attachments, potentially limited implant fixed bridges eg acrylic- metal based); occlusal splints (Michigan design and vacuum formed), orthodontic (Essix) retainers, surgical and radiographic stents.
• Provision of some types of fixed prostheses when required, especially with regards to designing removable protheses interfacing with these (overdenture copings, milled/ telescopic crowns).
• Attend monthly KPI (Key Performance Indicator) meetings with the laboratory team and the Restorative Laboratory Lead/ Manager.
• To undertake further training as required eg CADCAM techniques.
• Likely that duties may be altered from time to time in the light of changing circumstances and after consultation with the post holder and manager.

Knowledge and Qualifications
Essential criteria
- BSc(Dental Technology), BTEC National Diploma or equivalent
- Significant continuing professional and personal development.
- Registered as a Dental Technician with the General Dental Council
Experience
Essential criteria
- Significant post degree experiences as Dental Technician working with specialist prosthodontic individuals/ teams
- Proficient in in all aspects of fabrication of removable prostheses, stents, retainers etc
- Familiarity and experience in prosthodontic rehabilitation for complex, multidisciplinary cases.
- Ability to demonstrate resourcefulness, ingenuity and lateral thinking in problem solving / planning
Desirable criteria
- Experience in prosthodontic rehabilitation of head and neck cancer patients including obturators.
- Experience in digital dentistry -CAD/ CAM
Skills and Abilities
Essential criteria
- Proficient/ experienced in providing implant supported prostheses
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge and ability to design and construct an extensive range of C&B restorations especially those interfacing with removable prosthodontics
- Proficient in extra-oral maxilofacial prostheses
Communication
Essential criteria
- Familiarity with IT in terms of every day use
