Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a part time Senior Dental Officer to join Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The post is suitable for an experienced practitioner to work 4 days on Mondays/Tuesdays/Wednesdays/Fridays based primarily in the Dental Access Centre in the Queen Victoria Centre, Morecambe.

The post includes the provision of care within the specialties of special care and paediatric dentistry and unscheduled care for patients referred to the service by the Dental Helpline. Experience in specialist dental services and conscious sedation is preferred.

We provide a Level 2/3(a) service in line with the commissioning guides for both Paediatric and Special Care dentistry and the patients you will treat will be to this complexity. This role is supported by specialists in special care and paediatric dentistry, dental therapists and dental nurses who are qualified in extended duties.

Mentoring, clinical supervision and peer review time is available and endorsed. We are a supportive team who pride ourselves in developing our staff to the best of their abilities. We encourage participation in the Tier 2 accreditation schemes for Paediatric dentistry and Special Care dentistry as well as other training such as sedation qualifications which will help you to provide the excellent care we demand for our patients. This gives the successful applicant scope for skill and career development which would be rewarded through the Band B pay scales.

Main duties of the job
• The provision of high-quality routine and urgent care dentistry to service users referred to BTH Dental Services (special care and paediatric).
• The provision of urgent care to service users referred to BTH Dental Services from the Lancashire Call Handling Service.
• The provision of inhalation sedation and domiciliary dental care as required.
• The provision of exodontia and comprehensive dental care under general anaesthetic supporting Senior Dental Officers.
• The daily supervision of Dental Care Professionals as part of the dental team.
• The appropriate use and care of Trust facilities and resources
• To provide care following NHS regulations, Trust policies and procedures, NICE guidance, Delivering Better Oral Health.
• To utilise available skill-mix as appropriate.
• The post holder is required to undertake any other duties in line with those that could reasonably be expected of a Band B Dental Officer in line with the SPDCS terms and conditions and competencies.

Please note, you will be required to repay the cost on appointment. This will be collected via a salary deduction. You can choose whether to pay this over 1-3 months from your salary or as a one-off payment on commencement in post. The level of check required depends on the role that you have been offered. Currently the charges are - Basic DBS check £22.00, Standard DBS check £22.00 and Enhanced DBS check £42.00.

You are encouraged where possible, to register for the DBS update service. This is an annual registration fee of £13. By registering for the update service you will not have the additional cost of repeated disclosures.

Should you withdraw your application, you may be required to reimburse the cost of the DBS check.

DBS checks remain free of charge for volunteer positions.
