Job overview

The post holder will be part of the Network Team delivering an efficient, responsive, cost effective and quality driven service to the userbase and customers on 300+ sites

The post holder's main role will be to work as part of the Network Team maintaining the systems and equipment for providing wired and wireless network services, and user connectivity.

The postholder will provide resolutions to faults and requests within the agreed SLAs for each customer, with guidance from senior members of the Network Team

Main duties of the job

  • Manage own work to deliver agreed programmes on time and in full.
  • Be aware of our customers and their objectives.
  • Be aware of relevant developments within the NHS environment and beyond.
  • Participate in the delivery of work programmes for the Network Team.
  • To assist in ensuring that THIS customers gain maximum benefit from the opportunities provided by the Infrastructure, specifically by identifying issues regarding use, and assisting in the making of recommendations on how improvements can be made.
  • To assist in ensuring all supported Network services provided to our customer's supports their business needs. In particular they must work correctly, reliably as expected and are able to deliver continuous service mas required.
  • Support and management of the Analogue telephony systems used by the Trust
  • Assist with Research and testing of connectivity for new devices for use with Wi-fi and new systems
  • To ensure that all work is completed in accordance with agreed timetables and SLA's, and to liaise with users and suppliers in the event of any problems.
  • To assist with the implementation and connectivity of new systems and devices to the 'Data Network' and take an active part in IT projects as set by the IM&T Service Manager - Network Telecoms and Collaboration.

You will be part of a team of network engineers supporting users and systems on 300+ sites on 2 large networks

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To provide third line support for Network Infrastructure / connectivity for Systems across all sites with support from senior Network Team staff.
  • To adhere to all system documentation and to update as required.
  • Investigate IM&T telephony issues, analyse and choose the best option to resolve the issue with guidance from Network Team
  • To give advice, as required, on the network elements of new systems which are proposed, being procured or being implemented, specifically to ensure that when installed they can be easily and safely supported.
  • Provide training for other staff & customers in connecting devices to the network.
  • Create and develop "How To" documents to enable customers and staff to install and manage their own devices to improve user experience.
  • Freedom to work independently to complete workload, but refer to line manage when required/appropriate.
  • To liaise with third party support contractors, and to bring any issues relating to their performance to the attention of the IM&T Service Manager - Network Telecoms and Collaboration as appropriate
  • Occasional work within HM Prison establishments which require post holder to apply for Counter Terrorism Clearance.
  • May be required to work outside normal hours to facilitate system maintenance / upgrades or project work on an ad hoc basis.
  • Taking part in an out of hours on call rota providing network cover for systems and user connectivity.

Person specification

QUALIFICATIONS / TRAINING

Essential criteria

  • Educated to degree level or having equivalent relevant experience working to support a large multi-site data network and hardware
  • Good level of education GCSE level Maths, English
  • Commitment to continuing professional developmen
  • Demonstratable competency undertaking mandatory training

Desirable criteria

  • ITIL qualification
  • Qualification in networking
  • Training in Cisco systems

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE & EXPERTISE

Essential criteria

  • Significant experience of operating a range of recent operating systems on computers and network switches, cores and firewalls
  • Excellent understanding and experience of troubleshooting of networking LAN / WAN protocols (in particular TCPIP)
  • Good working knowledge of available infrastructure systems.
  • Significant experience of working with a technology infrastructure team
  • Experience of managing 3rd party contractors whilst on site
  • Significant experience in working in the NHS or other large organisations
  • Working knowledge of Network Architecture and infrastructure
  • Ability to take complex system configuration and relay this in a simplified way to other non technical staff / customers
  • n depth knowledge of Vlan configuration and associated switch configuration
  • Good working knowledge of configuring firewalls
  • Knowledge and expertise in Wifi networks
  • Awareness of confidentiality and security standards associated with network systems
  • Ability to draw out theory into Diagrams using software eg Visio

The Trust will administer the DBS check on your behalf and will recover the cost (Enhanced £42.90, Standard £22.90 or Basic £22.90) from your salary when you commence in post (including Internal staff). You will also be required to participate in the DBS Update Service and pay the £13 cost per year. This is a condition of your employment.
