Job overview
The post holder will work as part of a team of Governance staff providing comprehensive data management support to the department.
The post holder will be leading on the development of Electronic Data Capture (EDC). review, support, validation and oversight of clinical trials database management service on behalf of Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Trust Research and Development Department.
They will develop the use of REDCap and other academic and commercial data management systems to their full potential and manage and maintain these resources for the recording of clinical trials data, ensuring that they are compliant with Good Clinical Practice, current national and international guidelines and legislation on clinical trials, by regulatory validation documentation for all applicable databases.
Main duties of the job
Lead data management for clinical trials, using expertise in REDCap, relational databases, and SQL to design, build, and validate compliant data systems and case report forms in line with GCP, MHRA, and UK data protection requirements. Provide specialist advice to researchers on data collection, management, and interpretation, supporting study design, statistical analysis, and reporting for sponsors, data monitoring committees, and research networks.
Ensure data integrity, quality assurance, and regulatory compliance by maintaining Trial Master File documentation, developing SOPs, and resolving data quality issues in collaboration with study teams. Manage secure data storage and handling in line with UK GDPR, acting as a key contact for data queries and ensuring timely, accurate responses.
Support study setup and delivery through training at Site Initiation Visits, promoting GCP and correct data entry practices. Contribute to audit and inspection readiness, and produce clear reports and data insights. Continuously improve data management processes to meet evolving research and organisational needs, ensuring accurate and efficient delivery.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
• To build and maintain effective working relationships with other staff members both within the department, other Moorfields Eye Hospital departments and with external agencies and Sponsor companies.
• To attend appropriate multi-disciplinary meetings to assist in the identification of eligible patients for clinical trials.
• To attend and present information at the relevant staff group and department meetings
• To respond to routine and ad hoc requests for information from staff within the CRF, Sponsor and across the Trust including clinicians, researchers and management.
• To respect the confidentiality of the patient data and not disclose data to any unauthorized persons in accordance with the UK GDPR and Data Protection Act 2018.
• To take responsibility for identifying personal training and development needs within the context of service development and Performance Development Review (PDR).
• To assist with new staff orientation programs within the department.
Person specification
Education and Training
Essential criteria
- Degree in a relevant subject (e.g. data science, statistics, computer science, or life sciences) or equivalent experience, with significant experience in clinical trial data management within an NHS, academic, or non-commercial research setting.
- Advanced knowledge of clinical data management systems (e.g. REDCap), relational database design, and SQL, supported by practical experience in database development, validation, and regulatory compliance (GCP, MHRA requirements).
- Postgraduate qualification in a relevant field (e.g. clinical research, biostatistics, or data science) or equivalent specialist knowledge gained through experience, including statistical analysis and preparation of analysis-ready datasets (e.g. using R)
