Avon and Somerset Constabulary are dedicated to providing a high standard of service to the public and ensuring that the investigations into deaths within our jurisdiction are conducted thoroughly and with compassion. We are currently seeking a dedicated Senior Coroner Officer to join our team. This is a role to make a positive difference for grieving people.

As a Senior Coroner Officer, you will manage a team of committed and compassionate Coroner Officers working in a busy environment, ensuring all cases are handled efficiently and sensitively, in accordance with legal requirements.

You will act as a liaison between the Coroner's Office and external partners, maintaining relationships and ensuring effective communication and an efficient service. You will provide support and information to bereaved families during periods of trauma, ensuring they are treated with compassion and respect throughout the investigative process.

This is a part time role, based in the village of Flax Burton near Bristol, a quiet self contained site co-located with the Coroner team, coroner court and mortuary. You will be employed by Avon and Somerset Constabulary and will report daily to His Majesty's Senior Coroner.

In this role, your main responsibilities will include:

  • Ensuring the Coroners Officers promptly and accurately record all sudden deaths in accordance with the requirements of the law.
  • Dealing with telephone and personal enquiries from partners, and bereaved families, ensuring that confidential information is not disclosed.
  • Dealing with cases of sudden death, liaising with internal and external agencies such as legal teams, medical professionals, pathologists in relation to service provision.
  • To be responsible for all correspondence relating to the unit ensuring that all enquiries and complaints are satisfactorily progressed.

Skills and Experience:

  • Excellent leadership and team management skills.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to handle sensitive situations with empathy and professionalism.
  • High level of attention to detail and organisational skills.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and manage a demanding workload.
  • Hold a full current driving licence or be able to travel using alternative transport.

It would be desirable but not essential to have:

  • Experience in a similar role, preferably within a Coroner's Office, law enforcement, or legal environment.
  • An understanding of the legal framework and procedures related to death investigations.

Applicants successful at shortlisting will be invited to attend interview on 21st October 2024.

This is a part time role working 18.5 hours per week within Monday - Friday, exact hours/days can be discussed with the successful applicant.

The successful applicant will receive a wealth of training alongside an existing Senior Coroner Officer, including training on bespoke computer systems, trauma management as well as ongoing access to Continuous Professional Development.
