General Summary
Bonnier Books UK is seeking an experienced senior commissioning editor to join Zaffre. In this role, you will be responsible for acquiring and developing compelling crime and thriller titles that captivate readers and drive commercial success.
Zaffre was launched in 2015 and includes bestselling authors such as Lynda La Plante, Wilbur Smith, Rosie Goodwin, Robert Peston, Susie Dent and T. M. Logan. As the senior commissioning editor, you will have a proven track record of successfully commissioning and publishing bestselling titles, as well as a deep understanding of the crime and thriller genre. You will be adept at shaping manuscripts, providing constructive feedback, and guiding authors through the publishing process. Your exceptional editorial skills, combined with a keen commercial acumen, will enable you to acquire and develop titles that resonate with our diverse readership.
Collaborating closely with the wider Zaffre Fiction team, you will contribute to the strategic direction of the list, ensuring that our crime and thriller offerings remain at the forefront of the market. You will also play a pivotal role in managing the editorial workflow, working closely with authors, agents, and internal stakeholders to deliver high-quality publications on time and within budget.
Key responsibilities
- Working with the Publisher and Editorial Director on the publication of existing Zaffre Fiction authors - from author care and administrative duties to editing, project-managing and desk-editing - including taking sole responsibility for a number of titles.
- Commissioning up to circa 8 books a year with a particular focus on trend-leading crime and thriller fiction with broad appeal.
- Add to an already strong network of authors, agents and scouts, working to make Zaffre Fiction a destination imprint.
- Being part of a closely-knit team and contributing to list strategy.
- Managing relationships with other departments, including sales, marketing, publicity, design and production.
Qualifications and Experience
- You will be a passionate reader of crime and thrillers with exceptional taste and strong commercial acumen.
- You will have at least three years' experience within a trade publishing team.
- Excellent project management skills, ideally with experience of desk editing and successfully steering books from acquisition to publication.
- Self-motivated with the ability to manage and prioritise a varied workload to meet multiple deadlines.
- Exemplary attention to detail.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- An interest in learning and developing skills within a fast-paced, energetic and outward-looking department.
- A keen understanding of the print and digital markets.
