Job overview

We welcome applications to this fixed term post for a Senior Clinical Fellow in the General Surgery department with an interest in pelvic floor at Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation trust.

The post is intended to give the successful applicant hands-on experience in a busy Pelvic Floor Unit. It is expected that the appointee will be given opportunity to work across all 3 main sites (Southend, Basildon and Broomfield) to deliver the best exposure to all the service can offer.

The first designated Pelvic Floor clinics were started at Southend in 2007 followed shortly by PTNS and Rectal Irrigation Services. The Regional Pelvic Floor Unit was formally established at Southend in 2015 with the building of a brand new dedicated Unit and appointment of a Pelvic Floor CNS and a Pelvic Floor Fellow. This is a busy centre offering comprehensive pelvic floor service to patients from mid and south Essex areas

It may be possible, by agreement, to support exposure to other areas of general and colorectal interest within the department based on individual experience and interest including, and not limited to: general surgery day case operating, endoscopy and other areas of subspeciality interest such as abdominal wall, IBD, colorectal cancer, TAMIS, robotic-assisted surgery and complex pelvic surgery including exenteration.

Main duties of the job

If successful, you will be supported by a network of clinical and administrative staff, both at Southend and across Essex, providing multi-disciplinary care and guiding patients through their complex pathways.

Joining this expanding team will provide invaluable experience within the field of Colorectal Surgery in addition to offering high quality multi-disciplinary team working.

You will assist the Consultant Surgeons in the provision of Services including:

  • Clinics - You will support new and follow-up clinics.
  • Theatres - You will have the opportunity to participate and be trained in a wide range of procedures appropriate to their level of training
  • Ward duties - You will undertake daily ward rounds supporting the existing team of junior doctors and consultants
  • Academic/Research - It is expected to play a contributory role in current departmental research, audit, quality improvement projects and teaching as well as lead research projects under the supervision of Consultants.
  • On-Call - This post will participate in a General Surgery middle grade on-call rota.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • Full Registration with the General Medical Council
  • MBBS or equivalent. MRCS or equivalent

Desirable criteria

  • FRCS (Plas) or equivalent

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Previous experience at SpR (ie ST1-ST8) or equivalent level

Desirable criteria

  • Ability to develop and maintain a sub-specialty interest
  • NHS experience
  • Experience working in multi-disciplinary team
