Senior Clinical Scientist - Urodynamics and Clinical Instrumentation

We are seeking a highly motivated and dedicated healthcare scientist to join our team for 12 months as maternity leave cover. This role is based in the Urology department, providing the urodynamic service for outpatient, ambulatory and video urodyamics. The successful candidate with be a key part of the multidisciplinary team, working with complex urology patients and will join one of the largest urology departments in the UK providing highly specialist care for patients from across the UK and abroad.

Main duties of the job

The principal aim of this post is to lead, supervise, maintain and develop services requiring urodynamics, with particular emphasis on providing routine clinical diagnostic services in Urology to University College Hospitals, University College Hospitals at Westmoreland Street and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery.

There is a significant direct clinical aspect to the post in the provision of urodynamics services in the Trust. This involves directing and carrying out Pressure/Flow Studies (also known as Cystometrogram or CMG in the Out-Patients Department (OPD), and Video-Cystometrogram, or VCMG, in the Uro-radiology Department) to demonstrate specific clinical symptoms. It involves patient contact, interpretation of clinical investigations and reporting findings to referring clinicians. A high degree of technical and scientific skill and a sound understanding of the clinical background are required. A thorough understanding of all equipment used and their limitations are essential.

Scientific knowledge and experience and problem solving skills must be applied to a range of diagnostic and therapeutic problems. Administrative and supervisory skills will be used in organising service provision.

The post holder will undertake teaching and lecturing as required, and be responsible for the training, education and supervision of local and visiting staff; contributing to their continuing education and to the development of their competencies.

Participate in urodynamics studies, including the following: With an oversight from Principal Clinical Scientist lead VCMG studies in the Uro-radiology Department, with the assistance of a radiographer and/or healthcare assistant. With an oversight from Principal Clinical Scientist lead CMG and ambulatory urodynamic studies in the OPD, with the assistance of a nurse or healthcare assistant. Ambulatory urodynamics typically takes 3 to 5 hours during the day, occasionally overnight with the patient staying on the ward as an in-patient. Assist radiologists in carrying out VCMG studies in the Uro-radiology Department, working alongside radiographers. Undergo training in carrying out VCMG studies in the Uroradiology Department, initially assisting Principal Clinical Scientists and consultant staff, and developing during the training into competency to carry out and lead on VCMG studies. With support from the Principal Clinical Scientists, make correct scientific interpretation of patient conditions based on study findings, and create reports of results for review by the Principal Clinical Scientists prior to submission to the referring consultants, allowing clinicians to prescribe suitable treatment or surgical intervention to alleviate patients symptoms. During studies, the standard procedure may need to be modified or adapted to overcome artefacts or technical issues or answer specific clinical questions. The post holder will, in consultation with the Principal Clinical Scientist, have the freedom to act and must develop the experience and initiative to modify the study procedure accordingly. The post holder is required to ensure the safety and well-being of the patient at all times and be accountable for his/her actions.
