Senior Clinical Research Fellow

This job is brought to you by Jobs/Redefined, the UK's leading over-50s age inclusive jobs board.

This role is funded by an NIHR Programme Grant (Mixed methods co-design and evaluation of a Decision Support Tool to enable shared decision making for people who are considering cascade screening for Thoracic Aortic Disease: The DECIDE TAD Programme).

Thoracic Aortic Disease (TAD) is commonly caused by genetic mutations. Screening of the families of people with TAD using scans and genetic tests may lead to early detection, treatment, and a reduction in deaths.

Our preliminary work has identified barriers to the use of cascade screening in the NHS. To overcome these barriers, we will create a Decision Support Tool that defines treatment choices and provides information which empowers members of affected families to make decisions about screening that reflect their values and priorities. We think this will increase the number of people screened, improve early detection and treatment of TAD, address health inequalities in under-served groups, and improve quality of life.

You will be part of a multi-disciplinary team of scientists and clinicians who have been brought together within the Department of Cardiovascular Sciences to develop a programme of high-quality research. The group has a national and international reputation in translational research.

You will contribute to research productivity by developing and delivering research programmes in line with the research strategy of the Department of Cardiovascular Sciences. Productivity will be agreed with the NIHR Leicester BRC Cardiovascular Theme Lead and Head of Department. You will maintain and further develop a programme of high quality and competitive research capable of securing substantial external funding. It is anticipated that in due course the applicant will apply for an Advanced Fellowship. You will also undertake some teaching and clinical activities.

About you

We are looking for a candidate who has completed Higher Specialist Training in Cardiothoracic Surgery and is experienced in delivering clinical Cardiothoracic Surgery services in an NHS Trust. You should have evidence of a high-quality research programme in an area related to the cardiovascular theme of the NIHR Leicester BRC with a record of presentations of work at a national or international meetings.
