Job overview
This is a new post to support the existing team due to increased activities within the department. The remit of the postholder/s will be to work within the multi-disciplinary team providing and further developing care for patients within the service. In addition, the individual will be required to play an active role in the general workload of the Care Group while having a significant commitment to teaching and training of junior staff.
It is envisaged that the appointee will contribute to the development and delivery of aspects of these services depending upon their interests and experience.
Main duties of the job
Duties
Clinical:
To work with other middle grade performing day-to day care of the Gastroenterology patients in Rays of Sunshine Ward and/or Day Case Unit.
To maintain high quality communication both spoken and written with patients, parents, GP's and referring consultants
To attend endoscopy sessions , Gastroenterology outpatient clinics and also look after Gastroenterology patients who attends Phillip Isaac Day Case unit for hydrogen breath tests, Urea breath tests, impedance pH study, food challenge, pancreatic function tests, Video capsule enteroscopy and mono clonal antibody infusions. Opportunities are available to get experience in therapeutic endoscopic procedures including bleeding control (variceal banding, injection, clips etc), RNY loop enteroscopy & balloon enteroscopy, polypectomy, PEG and stricture dilation.
Attendance on consultant led ward rounds and MDT meetings and opportunity to attend adult gastroenterology meeting. Opportunities to attend specialist clinics such us joint GI/Liver clinic, Short Gut clinic, Gastro/Allergy clinic, Feeding clinic, coeliac clinic, adolescent transition clinic endoscopy review clinic and tertiary level constipation clinic.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The objectives of the post include:
1. Developing & understanding of all aspects of assessment and management of Gastrointestinal, Nutritional, Pancreatic and liver problems in children at tertiary level
2. Developing diagnostic skills in upper, lower endoscopy and enteroscopy in children
3. Developing endoscopic therapeutic skills in basic interventional procedures such as polypectomy
4. Developing administrative skills in dealing with colleagues in respect to appropriate service cover
5. Opportunity to attend appropriate courses and research
6. Contact with adult tertiary level specialist care provision for gastroenterology & hepatology & nutrition.
Person specification
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Registerable medical qualification
- MRCPCH or equivalent.
Desirable criteria
- Other higher degree or diploma (e.g., MD).
Registration
Essential criteria
- Full registration with GMC/GDC with License to Practice.
Audit & quality improvement
Essential criteria
- Thorough understanding of principles of medical audit and quality improvement.
Administration
Essential criteria
- Experience in day to day organisation of clinical services in a busy Teaching Hospital
Desirable criteria
- Familiar with current structure of Health Service and conversant with recent initiatives and changes.
Management and Leadership
Essential criteria
- Able to demonstrate an understanding of Kings Values.
