Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This post is suitable for candidates with previous Paediatric and neonatal experience in level 2 and 3 neonatal unit interested in advancing their paediatric training. Please also see table below. UK NHS experience is desirable.

The post holder will be responsible for the day-to-day management of patients under the supervision of a consultant Paediatrician. Clinical responsibilities will include:

  • Children's ward -ward rounds, discharge planning, acute admissions and seeing paediatric patients in emergency department. (Referrals from Urgent care GP and internal referrals from ED team and all paediatric patients < one year old who presented to ED)
  • Regular attendance and active participation in neonatal outpatient clinics.
  • Participation in overall supervision and education of junior doctors and medical students.
  • Taking an active part in the department's education programme.
  • Taking an active part in audit. An audit project is expected in this post.

Qualifications & Registration

Essential criteria

  • Registrable medical qualification
  • Full registration with GMC/GDC with license to practice
  • Valid Visa to work in UK

Desirable criteria

  • Higher qualification MRCPCH

Teaching and Experience

Essential criteria

  • Wide experience in all aspects of neonatal and Paediatric care, culminating in award of CCT or equivalent.
  • Evidence of ST 3/4 competencies Minimum one to two years of NHS experience

Desirable criteria

  • APLS /NLS provider

Administration

Essential criteria

  • Experience in day to day organisation of neonatal and Paediatric services in a busy Teaching Hospital

Desirable criteria

  • Familiar with current structure of Health Service and conversant with recent initiatives and changes.

Management and Leadership

Essential criteria

  • Able to demonstrate leadership capability within multi-disciplinary teams.

Desirable criteria

  • Management course and / or qualification.

Audit & quality improvement

Essential criteria

  • Thorough understanding of principles of medical audit and quality improvement.

Research

Essential criteria

  • Must be able to demonstrate ability to lead change
  • Experience of conducting or supporting clinical research

Desirable criteria

  • Relevant research experience in one or more aspects of Neonates or Paediatrics
  • Publication of relevant review articles or case reports

Teaching

Essential criteria

  • Experience of undergraduate and post-graduate teaching and exam preparation.

Desirable criteria

  • Teaching skills course / qualification.

Personal Skills

Essential criteria

  • Effective communicator, able to work in a close-knit team and co-operate with all medical and paramedical staff.

Desirable criteria

  • Familiarity with information technology and general computer skills.

Personal attributes

Essential criteria

  • Flexible and resilient.
  • Professional attitude towards work, reliability, good record of attendance and tidy personal appearance.
