Senior Clinical Fellow in Oncoplastic Breast Surgery

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Expected caseload:

  • It is anticipated that between 50-100 breast reconstruction patients will require input from the Plastic Surgery team per year, and approximately 100 microsurgical procedures will be performed electively per year within the department at UHCW.

Supervision:
• Consultant supervision will be provided for the clinical activities described above.

Objectives:
• To enhance your knowledge and understanding of:
• Breast Assessment and diagnosis of breast pathology.
• Understanding the pathway and delivering safe and effective counselling for patients at high risk of developing breast cancer.
• Understanding the pathway of breast cancer management.
• Being part of the team liaising with other members of the breast multidisciplinary team
• Working closely with other specialities including breast surgeons, pathologists, breast care nurses, oncologists, radiologists.

To become more skilled in:
• Assessment and management of patients with breast cancer and those at high risk.
• Primary and secondary reconstruction
• Microsurgical free tissue transfer in the immediate setting and for delayed revision/reconstruction.
• The use of implants and adjuncts for breast reconstruction
• Counselling patients with a new diagnosis of breast cancer
• Undertaking simple and skin sparing mastectomy.
• Developing skills in sentinel lymph node biopsy and axillary clearance.
• Developing skills in wire guided wide local excision, therapeutic mammoplasty, LICAP / TDAP / LD flaps, and lumpectomy.

Candidates who hold the FRCS (Plast.) examination, are post- or peri-CCT, and require subspecialty training in Oncological, Oncoplastic and microsurgical breast reconstruction and microsurgery.
