Job summary

We are seeing a Senior Clinical Fellow (Registrar Grade) to join our Neurosurgery department, based at the Royal Preston Hospital.

The Contract of employment will be for fixed term of 12 months in the first instance, potentially renewable annually based on requirement and performance. Salary will be based upon the appropriate Specialty Registrar scale (MT04) and will be based at the Royal Preston Hospital.

You will be working at registrar level to ensure effective delivery of clinical care within the department. This post is for an experienced neurosurgical trainee able to work at registrar level. It offers significant surgical and clinical exposure to enhance experience, and will provide opportunities for training and career advancement. Educational and research activity will be encouraged.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will:

  • Specifically adopt, in conjunction with colleagues, an active role in the delivery of the neurosurgery service for the Directorate.
  • Provide direct input to patients; contribute to multi-disciplinary teams and participate in the delivery of routine neurosurgical care and urgent demand
  • Participate in the Neurosurgery on-call rota on the middle-grade tier
  • Focus on educational and training requirements, as specified by the Assigned Educational Supervisor
  • Assume a continuous commitment for the care of patients, even if employed less than full-time and ensure that adequate arrangements are made for leave and off duty periods.
  • Promote high professional standards of clinical care for patients, both through direct patient care and by the maintenance of continuing professional development.
  • Contribute to the development of specialist elements of the services to reflect perceived priorities within available resources.

About us

Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is one of the major acute trusts in the North West, with all of the usual specialties on site, as well as being a Tertiary Centre for Lancashire and South Cumbria in the Departments of Neurosciences, Nephrology, Oncology, Plastic Surgery and Burns.

Undergraduate medical student teaching commenced in Oct 2003. We offer the full range of acute outpatient and inpatient services to the 380,000 people living in Central Lancashire. The Neurosurgery Department serves a population of 1.68 million.

The Department is staffed by 14 Consultants; there are 12 Middle Grades which include 4 Training posts (ST4-8) and 7 Trust appointments and one Spinal Fellow. They rotate between each Consultant/team every six months. There are 3 ST1-3 and 5 Clinical Fellows . The role is supported by Nurse Practitioners and Specialist Nurses.
