Job summary
This post offers extensive clinical experience in Respiratory Medicine and Lung cancer. It would be suitable for a IMT3/ST3 trainee in General Medicine planning to pursue a career in Respiratory Medicine, General/Acute Medicine, or Infectious diseases (ID). The post is initially for a one-year period with the option of extending further if mutually agreeable.
This post will provide an excellent opportunity to gain experience in Respiratory Medicine including Lung cancer, Pleural disease, Thoracic ultrasound, Bronchoscopy and EBUS. The National optimal pathway is being introduced to meet the waiting time targets as set out in the Independent Cancer Taskforce report. In the face of increased referrals and lower conversion rates, a triage process is being introduced to reduce the cost whilst supporting the drive to improve early diagnostic rates. This post holder will be actively engaged in this triage process under consultant supervision.
This post is based in the Chest Clinic at King George Hospital. There is a respiratory ward at the King George site providing specialist respiratory input including Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) and Non-Invasive Ventilation (NIV). In addition to the general respiratory clinics, the chest clinic provides specialist clinics in Lung cancer, Sleep and Ventilation, Tuberculosis, Long Covid, and a pleural procedures clinic. There is a Pulmonary function laboratory and an endoscopy suite for Bronchoscopy and EBUS procedures.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will support the delivery of comprehensive respiratory care for patients referred to the Respiratory unit, provide in-reach to the Medical Assessment Unit, perform Bronchoscopy and EBUS and undertake outpatient clinics.
The key duties and responsibilities of the post will be:
- Clinical responsibility for the proper functioning of the Respiratory Unit, including ward round, and out-patient clinics.
- Perform practical procedures including Bronchoscopy, EBUS, Thoracic Ultrasounds and Thoracocentesis with appropriate supervision as needed.
- Triage lung cancer out-patient referrals under the supervision of a consultant.
- Actively participate in the Lung cancer Multi-disciplinary Meetings.
- Participate in undergraduate and postgraduate education programme, including supervision of junior medical staff, and undergraduate medical students, and take an active part in local and regional educational programmes.
- Develop standards, procedures and systems that are safe, high quality and efficient patient care.
- Develop clinical guidelines/community protocols and best practice for the management of a wide range of acute medical presentations /admissions.
- Ensure robust risk management and governance arrangements are in place on respiratory wards. You will be supported by our clinical governance lead.
- Participate in relevant audit and quality assurance processes, including reviews of manpower requirements.
- Assist in training and supervision of medical trainees in all procedures.
