Job summary

We are seeking Senior Clinical Fellows in our Intensive Care Unit (ICU)

This post forms part of the Lancashire teaching hospitals Overseas Registrar Development and Recruitment Program (ORDeR Program).

This is a program which is recognised by the GMC and to which (if required) the trust can sponsor successful candidates to gain their GMC registration through trust sponsorship.

In this post you will work in the Critical Care Unit at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is spread across 2 hospitals. There is a 34-beded critical care unit admitting over 1300 patients per year at Royal Preston Hospital and an Enhanced Care Unit at Chorley and South Ribble Hospital run by 19 consultants with an interest in Intensive Care, along with junior support staff. The unit at Preston has accreditation for all stages of Intensive Care Medicine training.

The unit at Royal Preston Hospital is a mixed unit made up of level 2 & 3 beds. It has a varied case mix including General Medicine, General Surgery, Trauma, Vascular, Renal Neurosciences, Upper-Gastrointestinal and Maxillofacial Surgery.

The Department has undergone a period of rapid expansion, which is reflected in the age and attitude of its career grade members

Main duties of the job

The post holder will:

  • Specifically adopt, in conjunction with colleagues, an active role in the planning, development and delivery of the critical care services for the Directorate.
  • Provide a Critical Care service across the Trust,
  • Participate in the trainee critical care rota on both hospital sites with additional cover during colleagues' absence.
  • Assume a continuous commitment for the care of patients, even if employed less than fulltime and ensure, in consultation with colleagues, that adequate arrangements are made for leave and off duty periods.
  • Promote high professional standards of clinical care for patients, both through direct patient care and by the maintenance of continuing professional development.
  • Exercise the freedom to develop specialist elements of the services to reflect perceived priorities within available resources.
  • Undertake administrative duties involved with the care of his/her patients.
  • Promote high professional standards of clinical care of patients and the health and safety of the theatre environment.
  • Maintain continuing education and professional development at least to the requirements of the faculty of intensive care.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Eligible for Full GMC Registration and Licence to Practice
  • MBBS or equivalent.
  • Completed one year's internship (which can be multi-specialty) or based solely in one specialty.
  • Minimum 3 years postgraduate training courses completed including one of the following: oMD in Anaesthesia, ICM or Medicine oDiplomate of national board (DNB) in Anaesthesia, ICM or Medicine oMaster's degree (MSc) in Anaesthesia, ICM or Medicine.
  • Engaged in medical practice for three out of the last five years including the most recent 12 months.
  • IELTS - average score 7.5 (min 7 in each subset) or OET (B score)

Desirable

  • Evidence of research and/or publications
  • Hold ALS / ATLS certification or equivalent

Experience

Essential

  • Have a minimum 3 years post foundation Training experience in Anaesthesia/ICM/ Medicine/Emergency medicine with Mandatory 6 months of ICM experience
  • Competent in independent airway Management.
  • Independent in insertion of Central Venous Catheters, Arterial Lines and perform Intubations.
  • Independently manage acutely unwell patients in critical care and provide Various organ supports

Desirable

  • Evidence of commitment to Clinical audit.
  • Experience in use of Ultrasound for central line insertion and perform ECHO in critical care.
  • Involvement in service improvement projects
