Job overview

This combined post is aimed primarily at senior anaesthetic trainees, or qualified anaesthetists wishing to gain experience in adult and paediatric anaesthesia for liver transplantation.

Clinical duties relating to liver transplantation include involvement in pre-operative assessment of patients prior to listing, anaesthesia for liver transplantation, hepato-biliary surgery and imaging procedures. Liver fellows may also be called upon to help with airway management and transfers for imaging of patients in the ICU. They will also be expected to contribute to teaching. On call duties will be for the liver transplant theatre as part of a rota with senior anaesthetic trainees alongside a Consultant at all times.

This post would be suitable for any Doctor looking for a senior fellowship, or a post CCT Anaesthetist looking for further specialist experience. We also have a proactive encouraging approach to doctors wishing to achieve CESR having successfully supported several colleagues through the process. Although this Senior Clinical Fellow post is not accredited for training, the appointee will be expected to participate fully in the educational and training programmes within the Department and the Hospital. The appointee will have a named educational supervisor and be expected to undergo annual review and appraisal. Annual leave and Study leave is commensurate with other post foundation doctors.

Main duties of the job

All employees are expected to undertake work on any of the Trust's sites as required by the service. As an employee of the Trust you will work in close co-operation with, and support other clinical, medical professional and managerial colleagues in providing high quality healthcare to the Trust's patients. Integral to these responsibilities is the following: -
• The provision of a first-class clinical service.
• Effective leadership to all staff engaged in the specialty.
• Sustaining and developing teaching and research in conjunction with King's College London / KHP.
• Undertaking all work in accordance with the Trust's procedures and operating policies.
• Conducting clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Trust's service plans.
• Maintaining the confidence of business plans and development strategies formulated for the specialty, the Care Group or the Trust.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
• Together with other colleagues to provide a service for patients. This includes all aspects of treatment and relevant management duties for the proper functioning of the Care Group.
• Shared responsibility with other colleagues for providing 24 hours, 7 days a week cover for the Unit on a rota basis. Responsible also for covering colleagues' periods of annual leave and short-term sickness.
• Participation in Multi-disciplinary Meetings.
• Contribution to audit and clinical governance programmes.
• Responsible for outpatient clinic commitments in peripheral hospitals as agreed with the Care Group management team.
• Contribute to the Care Group research interests in accordance with the Trust's R&D framework.
• Contribute to the audit programmes, Morbidity and Mortality, clinical governance programs and learning from Deaths.
• Conduct all activities within the contracted level of service and operating plan for service(s).
• Work in conjunction with clinical and other professional colleagues to ensure that the productivity of staff within the specialty is maintained and their job satisfaction is enhanced. This may include involvement in the appraisal process for peers and/or junior colleagues.
• Be aware of, and comply with, all Trust infection prevention and control policies, to include hand hygiene, personal hygiene, environmental and food hygiene.
• Prepare for and undertake the protective interventions that you are responsible for in a manner that is consistent with evidence-based practice and maintaining patient safety.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • Registerable medical qualification. (MB BS or equivalent degree)
  • Full registration with GMC with License to Practice.

Desirable criteria

  • Other higher degree or diploma (e.g., MD).

Experience

Essential criteria

  • This job is aimed at a candidate with the equivalent experience of a trainee with ST6/7 experience or one who is/will shortly be eligible for a consultant post.
  • Completion of pre-registration year

Desirable criteria

  • Evidence of excellence in training (e.g. medical school projects & prizes, post-graduate qualifications)
  • Preference will be given to candidates who have had some training in liver transplant, paediatric anaesthesia and major surgery.
  • Evidence of special commitment to speciality
  • ITU training
  • Completion of resuscitation courses such as ALS, ATLS

Administration

Essential criteria

  • Experience in day-to-day organisation of Transplant and HPB services in a busy Teaching Hospital

Desirable criteria

  • Familiar with current structure of Health Service and conversant with recent initiatives and changes.

Management and Leadership

Essential criteria

  • Able to demonstrate leadership capability within multi-disciplinary teams.

Desirable criteria

  • Management course and / or qualification.

Audit & quality improvement

Essential criteria

  • Thorough understanding of principles of medical audit and quality improvement.
  • Must be able to demonstrate ability to lead change.

Desirable criteria

  • Evidence of previous participation in audit & research projects

Research

Essential criteria

  • Experience of conducting or supporting clinical research.

Desirable criteria

  • Publication of relevant review articles or case reports.

Teaching

Essential criteria

  • Experience of undergraduate and post-graduate teaching and exam preparation.

Desirable criteria

  • Teaching skills course / qualification.
  • Commitment to undergraduate teaching

Personal Skills

  • Good standard of written and spoken English to facilitate communication with patients, healthcare professionals and other staff
