Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Responsible for the repair, maintenance and servicing of a defined range of medical equipment/devices, requiring a high degree of competence, experience and specialised knowledge.

Please note we are also willing to consider candidates who don't meet all the essential criteria as a progression against agreed milestones, this will be under Annex 21 basis as defined in the Agenda for Change Terms and Conditions of Employment. Measures including pay and milestones underpinning this appointment will be discussed with the successful candidate by the appointing manager.

Training & Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • Good quality academic qualifications in engineering / technology; Masters or equivalent (e.g. HNC/HND/Degree + post-qualification training)
  • Extensive additional theoretical knowledge acquired through CPD (professional short courses, personal study, conferences)

Desirable criteria

  • Honours degree in Clinical Technology/Electronics or equivalent
  • Registered Clinical Technologist

Experience

Essential criteria

  • At least 3 years' experience as a technologist.
  • Experience in fault diagnosis.
  • Specialist knowledge on the maintenance and repair of a range of highly complex devices
  • Use of Office and other equipment specific software packages.
  • Disassembly and reassembly skills
  • Advanced knowledge of mechanical and/or electrical electronic engineering
  • Ability to use equipment management data bases

Desirable criteria

  • Knowledge and experience of working in a Health care setting
  • Knowledge of MHRA Managing Medical Devices April 2015

Communication and Relationship

Essential criteria

  • Able to communicate complex and varied information across professional boundaries to a range of staff both inside and outside the organisation.
  • Good negotiation skills.
  • Able to deal with complex and unpredictable situations.

Desirable criteria

  • Able to deliver teaching and training on complex equipment to other technologists

Analytical & Judgement Skills

Essential criteria

  • Able to make recommendations about issues with complex equipment
  • Interpretation of legislation/policy/complex test results where there is no precedent
  • Analysis and interpretation of engineering test results.
  • Able to provide assistance, support and advice to technicians in the diagnosis and correction of faults.
  • Investigate and manage causes of problems with users/ patients / equipment, escalating to managers if required

Planning & organisation skills

Essential criteria

  • Plan programmes of work within own service and other services, involving a wide range of other professionals.
  • Work independently and under pressure, prioritising workloads .
  • Exercise initiative when dealing with own area of competence and expertise.

  • Work unsupervised and under pressure.

Physical skills

Essential criteria

  • Advanced keyboard and Microsoft office software skills.
  • Ability to review and complete documentation in a complex and repetitive manner.
  • Ability to spend extended periods of time desk working with VGA equipment following appropriate assessment.
  • Ability to lift items of equipment up to 15kg, following Trust manual handling policy and practices.
  • Ability to work in small or awkward spaces; when installing or maintaining equipment

Other

Essential criteria

  • Be able to work within broad occupational policies and establish how these should be interpreted for the Trust
  • Full UK driving licence
  • Compassionate - demonstrates a caring nature towards patients, colleagues and the public.

If you are aged 16 or 17 and applying for a role that is more than 20 hours a week, please be aware that you will be asked to commence an Apprenticeship within the Trust alongside your role, as long as there is a suitable apprenticeship standard available. Salary: The quoted salary will be on a pro rata basis for part time workers.

The system will run a check against the key security features within your documentation. The system will provide us with an outcome of your check which will be stored securely on your personal file along with all other pre-employment check documentation.

  • Transfer of information: If I have previous NHS service - I consent to the transfer of my Electronic Staff Record (ESR) data between this and other NHS Trusts. I also consent to the Occupational Health Department confidentially accessing my occupational health records from my current or previous employer in order to check the status of my vaccinations, immunisations s and screening tests as relevant to the post. I understand this is an automated process and the information will only be used for these purposes prior to me taking up the position at NUH.
  • Disclosure and Barring Service: Your post maybe subject to a DBS check which incur a cost dependent on the level of check required (£42.90 for enhanced and £22.90 for standard). I agree to reimburse Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust the cost of a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check if it is required (by deduction from first month's pay). Should I decide to withdraw from my job offer, I agree to reimburse Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust the cost of the DBS check undertaken by cheque or other agreed method.
