The Role

REPORTS TO: Electrical Engineering Manager

LOCATION: Cardiff, Edinburgh or Glasgow (with flexible working options)

As a Senior Civil Engineer working with Bute Energy, you'll be responsible for managing the Civil Engineering process and related opportunities and issues for the existing portfolio of onshore development projects and new opportunities. This will encompass primarily onshore wind and also other technologies including solar and battery energy storage systems.

Main Responsibilities

  • Lead on all civil engineering matters for Bute Energy projects.
  • Procurement and management of civil, ground and access engineering consultants and contractors.
  • Provide guidance and advice on civil engineering issues and decision points including constructability.
  • Ensure civil design work takes account of CDM and this is considered throughout the design and construction stages.
  • Management of design interfaces between civil, electrical and wind turbine contracts.
  • Input to Bute Energy (and associated Joint Ventures) Board or other senior management meetings on civil engineering matters.
  • Provide specialist support to prepare for project FID and procurement activities.
  • Identify the need for specialist external technical support, manage the technical aspects of procurement of specialist external support, including drafting work scopes and undertaking technical assessment of proposals.
  • Review of proposals, reports and designs for all civil engineering matters to ensure compliance with Bute Energy requirements.
  • Management of consultants to deliver workable, consentable major component transport routes for projects.
  • Preparation of Employer's Requirements/Works Information for civil engineering works.
  • Undertake site inspections, inspect works and respond to technical queries.
  • Develop project documentation, tools, processes, and procedures that will benefit the development of the portfolio of projects.

What we look for in return

Knowledge & Skills

  • Strong communication skills both in-person and written that enable efficient and clear delivery to the wide range of project stakeholders - contractors, external parties (including the public), Board members and the wider Bute team.
  • Ability to recognise and plan for risk in projects, working with all appointed parties to reach efficient solutions.
  • Practical application of NEC4 and FIDIC forms of contract in the development and delivery phases of civil projects.
  • A proactive self-starter who can be trusted to work with remote colleagues and external teams efficiently and professionally at a senior level but who is also prepared to get into the roots of a problem and take ownership of issues on behalf of the project.
  • A good working knowledge of commercial design software and digital technologies.

Experience & Qualifications

  • Degree qualified Chartered Engineer with a strong technical capability and a keen interest in how the renewable energy sector needs to evolve to support a low carbon future.
  • Experience of all phases of the project lifecycle, preferably in the energy sector although other major infrastructure sectors can also be considered.
  • Experience of managing consultants and contractors through major value commissions and controlling internal and external interfaces of behalf of a client organisation.
  • Demonstrate a high degree of technical competency in the design of civil and structural project elements combined with practical experience of construction and commissioning.
