Our Transmission business is looking for experienced Civil Engineers to join our growing team in the UK! You will Lead the Civil and Building design elements of electrical transmission infrastructure projects (Substations, FACTs and HVDC), undertaking design governance on civil and structural elements of the project.

Location is flexible and the main office location can be either Newcastle, Manchester, or Aberdeen.

How you'll make an impact

  • Support the procurement and construction teams to deliver the projects technically.
  • Value Engineering (cost, schedule, quality & constructability)
  • Undertake design governance checks of designs produced by others.
  • Handle and take responsibility for the flow of design information and documentation.
  • Ensure information produced by consultants complies with the contract requirements, standards and legistlation and are developed to provide an appropriate solution.
  • Provide clear instructions to consultants and managing timescales and design scope.
  • Ensure design output corresponds with design inputs.
  • Interface and coordinate with other design and construction teams.
  • Chair design review & Technical clarification meetings, produce minutes of meetings and actions.
  • Draft Scope of Services and Works documents.
  • Produce design schedules and identify and link predecessors and successors.
  • On occasions, producing designs first hand using a combination of hand calculations, spreadsheets and software.
  • Undertake Site visits to identify constraints and resolve issues which may be faced during construction.
  • Change management and control and contractor value proposals or requirements changes and communicate implications of change.
  • Liaise with and lead discussions between internal designers, Clients, Consultants, and partners.
  • Identify and communicate when designs proposals will be subject to Building Regulations and the correct implementation of the Regulations are collected within the technical solution.

What you bring

  • Experience of both civil and structural design together with a broad architectural knowledge.
  • Earthworks design and a working knowledge of the Specification for Highway Works.
  • Experience in utilising computational frame design software (e.g., Masterseries, Tedds, STAD-Pro).
  • Ability to review calculations provided by others and understand if the level of information presented is suitable, appropriate and the design is economic. Such activities may require a detailed reviews of hand calculations and the output from computer design packages.
  • Experience of scoping services and works for consultants and specialist contractors e.g. ground investigation & surveys, design consultants, planning consultants etc
  • Knowledge of the consenting process (TCPA, DCO, Environmental Licencing, CAR etc)
  • The ability to read and understanding the obligations and implications of planning conditions, environmental impact assessments, and geotechnical reports.
  • A working knowledge of M&E design concepts, principles and associated coordination.
  • Experience of multidisciplinary works (e.g., Substations, energy from waste, water industry or petrochemical)
  • An understanding of Fire Design and concepts associated with the preservation of life and asset protection.
  • Solid understanding of both British and European codes of practice and Building Regulations
  • Ability to undertake scheduling of design activities, understand logic with other disciplines and construction activities.
  • Good knowledge of the Construction (Design & Management) Regulations 2015 and affiliated health and safety legislation including duty holder roles & responsibilities.
  • Good communication skills
  • Qualification in Civil, Structural or Architectural Engineering or equivalent construction qualification
  • Chartered Engineer or equal experience
