The Paediatric ED team work closely together, in delivering high quality care to over 28, 000 children and their families each year, working in collaboration with the Adult ED, the Urgent Care Centre, PATCH team and inpatient paediatric services.

St. Mary's Hospital operates as major trauma and is the hub for the north-west London trauma network and a vital part of the London-wide trauma system.

We have an active research strategy; with the department being recognised as a pilot site for numerous national studies. There have been more than fifty articles and posters accepted for publication or presentation at national and international conferences, produced by nursing and medical staff from the paediatric emergency department.

We are looking to employ a hardworking and committed individual to join our team as a Band 7 Clinical Senior Charge Nurse/Sister providing high quality care in our busy and fast-paced department. This is a full time post.

You will be supported by a team leader, Modern Matron and Nurse Consultant in Emergency Care. The role will support staff to develop their clinical skills through nurse led discharge from the ED, providing medications through the use of Patient Group Directives, plastering and suturing, requesting x-rays from triage and cannulation of paediatric patients. Your personal development will be supported through clinical supervision with the Paediatric ED Matron and Lead Nurse.

You will have the opportunity to line manage staff and develop your management skills through Trust led leadership programmes.

Main duties of the job

  • To have overall responsibility for the operational activity on the shift, including proactive management of issues to support performance of the emergency department 4-hr operational standard.
  • To act as the professional role model, leading and co-ordinating the nursing team.
  • To have shift responsibility for the management and organisation of the ward/department within the available resources.
  • To have shift responsibility for quality and safety
  • To be accountable for the overall provision of excellent nursing care and to work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team.

Education/Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • Registered Nurse (Child)
  • Post-registration emergency nursing education (A&E Course, Acutely unwell Child, Emergency Practice or Equivalent Experience)
  • Advanced Paediatric Life Support Course
  • Advanced Trauma Nursing Course (Or Equivalent Level 2 Trauma course) Or ability to undertake in a year

Desirable criteria

  • Relevant Masters Degree

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Significant post registration experience in Paediatric emergency medicine at band 6 level

Desirable criteria

  • Experience of Audit or Research
  • Experience in critical care setting

Skills/Knowledge/ Abilities
