Job Description
Senior CCS Engineer is a key role and will be supporting the Head of CCS Engineering to engage and manage stakeholders such as interfacing System Packages, Operations, Ergonomics, Safety Assurance, Network Rail and the Train Operator colleagues to ensure a holistic design approach to the Traffic Management Human Machine Interface.
The development of the holistic human machine interface is expected to set a new benchmark of end user integration for the industry, significantly improving the operational safety and efficiency of the HS2 railway.
Due to the specific challenges associated with high-speed operations, new functionality is required to be provided and integrated within the Traffic Management System. This functionality includes dynamic timetable management, provision of an integrated Human Machine Interface, mitigation of external operational threats such as excessive wind and the development of a reconfigurable Human Machine Interface to mitigate end user workload during degraded operations.

As Senior CCS Engineer you'll responsible for delivering significant CCS engineering activities in accordance with the CCS strategy and for developing the technical standards and specifications to which the systems will be designed and constructed. The job holder will be required to engage with programme stakeholders and, under the leadership of the Lead CCS Engineer, provide strategic direction for business critical workstreams.
About the role:
- Engaging and managing stakeholders to ensure a holistic approach for development of engineering solutions.
- Support in providing technical assurance for the CCS engineering discipline.
- Working closely with the wider engineering disciplines to develop CCS solutions that consider all relevant systems and sub-systems.
- Developing requirements, specifications and standards which deliver railway capability, while mitigating environmental impacts, within the programme and budget.
- Contributing to the management of technical risk for CCS engineering works.
- Providing technical expertise and advice relating to CCS engineering to the wider project organisation and external stakeholders.
- Conducting work in accordance with strategies for management of interfaces between CCS and other infrastructure systems, Network Rail and other 3rd party infrastructure.

About You:
Skills:
- Provides specialist technical support and leadership on all discipline-specific scientific, technical and engineering principles to those working directly with project development / delivery teams in area or phase.
- Capable of being a Standard Discipline Owner / Subject Matter Expert for area or phase.
- Provides technical, commercial management and leadership skills to support those working directly with project development / delivery teams in area or phase.
- Ability to communicate most discipline-specific technical ideas to stakeholders and colleagues, based on examples of application.
- Ability to apply the full range of principles relating to standards, safety and the environment.
- Applies principles and methods that ensure effective information management, modelling and data security; understands the approaches and consequences to data creation, transformation and visualisation and knowing when to seek guidance from other Subject Matter Experts or others.
Knowledge:
- Knowledge of the Common Safety Method (CSM) for risk evaluation and assessment and its relevance to CCS projects.
- Understanding of Control, Command and Signalling Systems and their relationship to railway operations, with in depth knowledge in numerous areas of CCS.
- Basic understanding of the specific technical issues associated with high-speed rail, the European Train Control System (ETCS) and Automatic Train Operation (ATO).
- Understanding of development, design and construction of similar CCS Systems
- Application of technical standards, both national and international, which apply to Traffic Management & Rail Control Systems and railway system design and operation
- Awareness of the technical issues associated with current and future Traffic Management & Rail Control Systems technology
- Chartered Engineer (or working towards) / Membership of an appropriate professional institution or the equivalent experience.
Type of experience:
- Development or delivery of Traffic Management & Rail Control Systems associated with modern railways or similar client organisations.
- Establishment of requirements and evaluation of proposed solutions
- Project planning and organisation to meet significant project deadlines including cost delivery and schedule targets
