Newport City Council is seeking a skilled and experienced Senior Building Control Surveyor to join its Regeneration and Economic Development service team. If you have significant expertise in building control and are eager to lead complex projects, this role offers a challenging and rewarding opportunity.
Your Duties:
- Lead and oversee a team of Building Control Surveyors, providing guidance, training, and allocating work.
- Be on-call to manage dangerous buildings, both during and outside normal working hours.
- Manage major projects, including city centre redevelopments and large commercial or industrial builds requiring fire engineering design solutions.
- Act as a member of the Fire Liaison Working Party with Gwent Health Trust, promoting a Development Team Approach.
- Handle preliminary enquiries for large commercial and industrial developments.
- Contribute to ISO 9001:2000 Quality Management System improvements and service delivery in line with Local Authority Building Control (LABC) initiatives.
- Develop and execute marketing and promotional strategies, including managing the annual Building Excellence Awards.
- Ensure compliance with all policies and procedures within the Building Control team.
- Manage demolitions, inspect scaffolding, and ensure public safety.
- Actively market the service, attending pre-application meetings and pursuing new work opportunities.
- Support legal enforcement actions and act as a specialist witness in court, as required.
- Deputise for the Building Control Manager in their absence.
- Provide mentorship and guidance to less experienced staff.
- Maintain a customer-focused approach, dealing courteously with clients and customers.
- Ensure health, safety, and welfare of team members, providing relevant training and guidance.
Your Profile:
Essential Criteria:
- Significant post-qualification experience in building control, surveying, and enforcement work.
- Full membership of RICS, MBEng, MCABE, or equivalent, or actively working towards full membership.
- Competency Class 2 validation with progress towards Class 2(f).
Knowledge & Skills:
- Expertise in designing complex projects, including commercial and industrial builds.
- Thorough understanding of building control legislation and statutory obligations.
- Proven ability to manage and develop staff effectively.
- Strong IT skills, including proficiency in GIS and advanced systems.
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills, with a commitment to customer care.
