An exciting opportunity has arisen for a well-motivated, enthusiastic and skilled Biomedical Scientist Team Manager to join the Haematology and Blood Transfusion department at Salisbury District Hospital.
The department is an approved training laboratory for HCPC registration and Specialist portfolio. Personal development, CPD, and attendance at meetings, both internal and external, are all actively encouraged.
As a Band 7 BMS you will have current registration with the HCPC with extensive post registration experience within Haematology and Blood Transfusion. You will have an MSc (or equivalent) or be willing to work towards one in a relevant scientific subject. You will have proven scientific, technical and communication skills in association with a commitment to training, quality management, continuous professional development, health & safety and audit. The successful candidate must be quality driven and have a good understanding of how to deliver a service that meets the ISO 15189:2012 standard. Knowledge of the requirements of the Blood Safety and Quality Regulations (2005) and experience of the SABRE /SHOT reporting process will be advantageous.
Main duties of the job
The role is a full time (37.5 hrs) and there is potential requirement for out of hours duties.
You will be joining our friendly team to assist and provide leadership, strategy and day to day support to the Haematology and Blood Transfusion team. You will work closely with the Laboratory Management Team to ensure that the high quality service is maintained and bring ideas from your extensive experience to help shape the future of the laboratory. Qualifications
Essential criteria
- HCPC registration
- BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science (or equivalent)
- Post-graduate, post registration training in a specialist area, leading to the completion of a specialist portfolio (or equivalent)
- MSc Biomedical Science or working towards (or equivalent)
Desirable criteria
- BBTS Specialist Certificate in Transfusion practice
- Willing to pursue further qualifications
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Detailed knowledge of theoretical and practical laboratory procedures within Haematology, Coagulation and Blood Transfusion
- Evidence of continuing professional development to demonstrate specialist knowledge
- Ability to work within all areas of the department
- Comprehensive understanding of quality control / quality assurance procedures
Desirable criteria
- Understanding of basic management practice
Experience
Essential criteria
- At least four years experience as an HCPC registered biomedical scientist
- Detailed working knowledge of laboratory information and management computer systems
- Demonstrable problem solving skills
- Detailed knowledge of standard IT packages e.g. Microsoft Office
Desirable criteria
- Experience of working alone out-of-hours

- Ability to organise own workload and that of subordinate staff
- Possess highly developed technical skills and be adept at all laboratory procedures
