The Special Coagulation department of the Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is looking for a Senior Biomedical Scientist to join our team. The role is part time, 22.5 hours.

Our diagnostic services are on two sites, with our main automated laboratory and specialist assays based at Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital, Basingstoke and our essential service laboratory at Royal Hampshire County Hospital, Winchester. In addition we support 2 community hospitals and 3 independent hospitals, providing care to over 500,000 patients. The Trust also provides treatment for complex conditions including liver cancer, colorectal cancer and is a national surgical service for a rare cancer Pseudomyxoma Peritonei. This role is based at the Basingstoke site.

The department is UKAS accredited and is an IBMS accredited training laboratory.

Main duties of the job

As Senior Biomedical Scientist Special Coagulation, the post holder is responsible for the day-to-day operation of this highly specialised haemophilia, haemostasis and thrombosis clinical diagnostic, technical and scientific service. The individual will perform a range of complex scientific procedures to enable the diagnosis of congenital or acquired haemophilia, haemostasis or thrombosis disorders and the associated monitoring of treatment, ensuring this is undertaken to the required high standards with adherence to the Department policies, procedures and methods. A close working relationship exists with the Haemophilia, Haemostasis and Thrombosis Centre and its team of Consultants, Haemophilia/Anticoagulant/Research nurses and the Clinical Trials Unit.

Andover War Memorial Hospital (AWMH) provides community and hospital services including a minor injuries unit, outpatient clinics, diagnostic imaging, day surgery, rehabilitation and maternity services.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • Degree in Biomedical Science 2:1 or above
  • HCPC registration

Desirable criteria

  • MSc in Biomedical Science
  • Managemement Qualification
  • IBMS Specialist Diploma

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Extensive and demonstrable post registration experience
  • Experience using a Quality Management System
  • Evidence of a Continuing Professional Development Programme

Desirable criteria

  • Experience of quality management system
  • Experience of leading verification of assay

Skills and abilities

Essential criteria

  • Ability to communicate complex information
  • Ability to follow complex procedures
  • Competent in the use of Microsoft Word and Excel

Knowledge

Essential criteria

  • Knowledge of the UKAS ISO 15189 standards
  • Extensive knowledge of Special Coagulation
