Applications are invited from dynamic and motivated individuals to work in this friendly, well-equipped Cellular Pathology department, which processes approximately 35,000 samples per year, providing essential services to the Trust and the wider healthcare community.

We are seeking a Histology Dissection Lead with a strong general Cellular Pathology technical background and leadership experience to work in our forward thinking and expanding department. You will have excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills and your work will ensure that the department continues to deliver a high quality, timely and effective service, where patient experience and safety is central.

The role will require the post-holder to be flexible and highly organised, able to align their values with those of the organisation, have the ability to delegate effectively and to work as part of an enthusiastic team with a 'can-do' positive attitude.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be able to support all aspects of a routine Cellular Pathology laboratory and will lead on supervising the histology service, taking an active role in training, quality management and health & safety.

Experience with training and development of Biomedical Scientist and support staff (including the IBMS Registration and Specialist Portfolios) would be advantageous.

Working for our organisation

The Cellular Pathology Department is in an exciting period of service development with key new equipment and a Digital Pathology solution in use for some specialty reporting and undergoing further clinical verification on others.

The central Histology laboratory service is situated on the Royal Hampshire Hospital site in Winchester with a small satellite team based at the Basingstoke & North Hampshire Hospital.

The post holder will work as part of the team based at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital, however the successful candidate may be expected to travel to the Basingstoke site occasionally. The successful candidate will work alongside other Senior Biomedical Scientists to ensure the smooth daily operations of the lab and provide technical support and advice to the teams on both sites.

Hampshire Hospitals Cellular Pathology is accredited by UKAS to ISO15189:2012 and complies with HTA standards.

Training and Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • HCPC Registration
  • MSc or equivalent qualification
  • Diploma of Expert Practice in Histological Dissection

Desirable criteria

  • Member of the IBMS
  • Leadership/Training qualification

Experience and Knowledge

Essential criteria

  • Extensive knowledge of specialist Cellular Pathology procedures acquired through technical and scientific courses, Instrument training courses, etc.
  • Knowledge and experience of quality management systems
  • Knowledge and experience of health and safety
  • Evidence of CPD

Desirable criteria

  • Experience of staff supervision

Skills and Abilities

Essential criteria

  • Ability to train and impart their skills and knowledge to other colleagues & trainees.
  • Excellent oral and written communication
  • Ability to organise own workload and that of other staff
