Job Title: Senior Biomedical Scientist Infection Science

Band: 7

Location: North Midlands and Cheshire Pathology Service

Hours: 37.5 hrs

Managerially accountable to: Departmental Lead Biomedical Scientist (BMS)

Professionally accountable to: Pathology Directorate Manager and Clinical Director

Key Relationships: [Internal] Pathology Medical staff, Senior Pathology staff and all other staff in Pathology including support functions staff and laboratory users. [External] Relevant Medical, Nursing and support staff, General Practitioners, other Health professionals and reception staff.

Role Summary
• Responsible as leading BMS for a specialist area / section. To manage and co-ordinate the day-to-day technical activities of the laboratory or main specialist section; including supervision and training of scientific and support staff in area of work.
• To be an efficient and flexible member of the laboratory team providing a high quality diagnostic service through specialist scientific and technical activities commensurate with the training and education of a Biomedical Scientist registered with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC).
• To provide specialist advice to clinicians (and to other laboratory users).
• To work within the written Policies and Procedures of the Department especially in relation to Health and Safety and Quality.
• To maintain competence to practice and to improve professional expertise through engagement in Continuous Professional Development (CPD).

Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • HCPC registration
  • MSc or equivalent
  • 5 or more years post HCPC registration experience in Bacteriology
  • IBMS specialist Diploma in Microbiology or equivalent

Desirable criteria

  • IT qualification

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Supervising / managing staff.
  • Working with complex and specialist laboratory equipment.
  • Pathology IT systems
  • Participation in audit and service development projects.

Desirable criteria

  • Experience of working in an acute NHS Trust Experience in presenting data to clinical and scientific audiences in a range of formats.

Skills and ability

Essential criteria

  • Analytical skills with the ability to work in a methodical and systematic way.
  • Work with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and contribute to their review and implementation
  • Work under pressure, prioritise workload and work to agreed schedules and deadlines.
  • Work within safe systems of work and report any deficiencies in those systems

Desirable criteria

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective Pathology networks with internal and external colleagues.

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
