About the role

Our engineering team is growing, and we're looking for multiple backend engineers on the mission to create the most powerful vehicle transaction platform on the planet!

Our Engineering department is going through a phase of growth, where we have more features to build than people to build them! Most of the work is greenfield projects developing brand-new features, solving some very interesting problems in transforming an industry.

We're looking for talented Senior Backend Engineers to join our dynamic teams across all our "worlds" - dedicated groups focused on specific areas of the business. Each world fosters a collaborative environment where multiple squads work together to achieve our goals.

Here's a glimpse into the exciting worlds you could be a part of:

  • Payments - Our payments teams provide dealers and sellers with a truncated and secure payments platform that powers every Motorway transaction. (Motorway pay)
  • Vehicle Profiling - Our vehicle profiling teams experiment and develop brand-new features that improve the vehicle journey across our platforms. Working with the latest ML techniques to covering the initial profiling process to shipping.
  • Dealer (B2B) - Our dealer teams look after the Dealer B2B Motorway experience and are responsible for enabling dealers to find their perfect stock. They cover the dealer facing public site, onboarding flow, vehicle discovery, building logic and the post-sale experience. The Dealer teams are in charge of creating the most personalised vehicle acquisition platform on the planet by using the latest ML techniques presenting dealers of their ideal stock. They're bringing all the simplicity and beauty of a consumer-facing platform to the B2B sphere.
  • Transport - Our Transport team ensures transparency, trust, and peace of mind to buyers and sellers by building our end to end transportation service covering the appraisal, collection, and delivery of Motorway Purchases. (Motorway move)
  • Automation - Our automation team is responsible for implementing features that streamline the experience for our hard-working comrades fighting on the front lines of the fast lane.
  • Customer Activation (B2C) - Our CA world looks after the Seller B2C Motorway experience, becoming the destination for car owners to sell their vehicle and track its value confidently and conveniently through innovative tools and data-driven insights. They cover the top of the funnel when it comes to generating traffic and getting cars into our daily sales. As a result, user experience is everything...making the seller journey as easy and seamless as possible.

Our Tech stack

Typescript using a microservice Node.JS architecture, utilising the latest JS features. We use PostgreSQL and Redis. We're currently using AWS for our deployment using a microservices architecture. We are currently moving to a serverless-first event-driven architecture.

What you'll do:

  • Develop and maintain high-quality backend systems and APIs
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and implement scalable and efficient solutions
  • Write clean and well-documented code, following best practices and coding standards
  • Conduct code reviews and provide constructive feedback to peers
  • Analyse and optimise system performance and scalability
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest industry trends and technologies
  • Participate in architectural design discussions and contribute to technical decision-making
  • Ensure the security, reliability, and maintainability of backend systems

Requirements

  • Significant commercial experience with JavaScript is required. In particular, experience with ES6/7 features, and technologies and frameworks such as node.js, Vue, Express or Sequelize.
  • Experience with type-safe languages preferably Typescript and relational databases (Postgres, MySQL)
  • Strong in common software engineering patterns and practices
  • Comfortable with cloud services (AWS, GCP, Azure) preferably AWS
  • Able to autonomously prioritise work and implement, proactively communicating progress and working with others to unblock themselves and others.
  • Experience writing tests (Unit, Integration)
  • Experience leading feature development
  • Experience designing and implementing architecture
  • Micro Services/Distributed Systems Experience
  • Experience mentoring more junior engineers
