We are looking to offer an IT Portfolio/ Programme Director the opportunity to join our expanding Group IT team based in Stevenage.
About the role
As the IT Portfolio / Programme Director, you will oversee and manage the entire IT project portfolio, ensuring the successful delivery of over 250 projects at various stages of progress. This role requires a strategic thinker with extensive experience in portfolio and programme management, as well as a strong background in managing complex IT projects and being able to influence senior members of the company management team, to set expectations and agree project prioritisation.

As the IT Portfolio/ Programme Director, you'll get the opportunity to:
- Leadership and Strategy: Develop and execute the IT portfolio strategy in alignment with the company's overall business objectives. Provide leadership and direction to the IT project management team, fostering a culture of innovation and continuous improvement.
- Portfolio Management: Oversee the planning, execution, and delivery of the IT project portfolio. Ensure that projects are completed on time, within scope, and within budget. Monitor project progress and address any issues that arise.
- Programme Management: Manage multiple programmes within the IT portfolio, ensuring that they are aligned with business goals and deliver value to the organisation. Coordinate and prioritise resources across projects to optimise efficiency and effectiveness.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Work closely with key stakeholders, including business leaders, project managers, and customers, to understand their needs and ensure that the IT project portfolio is delivering value. Communicate project status, risks, and issues to stakeholders in a clear and timely manner.
- Quality Assurance: Implement and maintain robust quality assurance processes to ensure that all IT projects meet the highest standards of quality and reliability. Collaborate with QA teams to define and enforce testing standards and practices.
- Risk Management: Identify and mitigate risks associated with the IT project portfolio. Develop and implement risk management strategies to minimise the impact of potential issues on project delivery.
- Team Development: Build and develop a high-performing IT project management team. Provide coaching, mentoring, and professional development opportunities to team members. Foster a collaborative and inclusive team environment.
- Resource Management: Ensure that resources are allocated effectively across the IT project portfolio. Oversee the selection and onboarding of new team members and external partners as needed.
- Continuous Improvement: Champion continuous improvement initiatives within the IT project management function. Identify opportunities for process improvements and implement best practices to enhance project delivery.
- Governance: Responsible for the Governance structure that is in place and chairing governance forums
- Reporting: Measure Project Progress and performance against KPIs
What you'll bring?
- Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Business Administration, or a related field. A master's degree is preferred.
- Proven experience in a senior IT portfolio or programme management role, preferably in a large, complex organisation.
- Strong knowledge of portfolio and programme management methodologies and best practices.
- Experience managing large-scale IT projects and programmes with multiple stakeholders.
- Excellent project management skills, with a track record of successfully delivering complex IT projects on time and within budget.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships and influence stakeholders at all levels of the organisation.
- A strategic thinker with the ability to align IT project initiatives with business objectives.
- Experience in the technology or digital services industry - advantageous
- Knowledge of modern IT project management tools and technologies - advantageous
- Familiarity with agile and waterfall development methodologies as well as Lean and Prince 2 or equivalent project management methodologies - advantageous
