Job Description
Transport Team Manager (M1)
Location: Basingstoke Distribution Centre.
Reporting to: Transport Operations Manager.
In a nutshell:
Team management for subset of Transport (incl. Fleet) colleagues working across shift, including the allocation of clerical workload to optimise utilisation and capability. Delivers great service to our stores, demonstrating a leadership approach that promotes an inclusive culture, leading to high levels of trust which drives a high performing team whilst also meeting legal, KPI and budgetary targets.
What you need to do:
- Responsible for the day-to-day people management for direct reports and escalating complex issues when required
- Lead and manage the day-to-day Transport Clerical team and activities, including resource allocation, capability and utilisation
- Deliver a consistent business performance and standard across the end-to-end transport operation, managing colleague performance to ensure the delivery of an excellent site operational performance safely and efficiently, achieving KPIs
- Monitor and implement compliance across Transport Operations activities
- Influence, manage and maintain external relationships across a variety of stakeholders, including our Stores
- Identify efficiencies and continuous improvement opportunities whilst understanding the balance between service and cost, which should be presented to the Shift Manager
- Operate within legislation, policy and process in all matters ranging from people management to safety, health and environment
- Supporting the People Plan and accurate colleague life cycle through use of the HR business model
- Systematically work through information, knowing when to move at pace and when to deepen analysis
What you need to know and show:
- Have an understanding of the relevant legislation, policy and process in all matters relating to people management, safety, health and environment relevant to your working location and be able to apply this
- Build collaborative working relationships and communicate clearly with internal and external stakeholders
- Ability to lead, engage and inspire a large team to deliver successful results
- Confident in making time-pressured decisions in a fast-paced and ever-changing environment, with the courage to challenge the status quo

- Ability to keep focus under pressure but ask for support when issues persist
What decisions I can make including budget:
- People management decisions in line with legislation, process, policy and our values at your level of authority
- Operational priorities and day-to-day decision making to achieve the work plan
Directly or indirectly manages:
- Directly manages a small team of Transport Clericals
- Directly manages a large number of Transport colleagues within their team, including permanent and agency colleagues
