ABOUT THE ROLE

Reporting to the Head of Research Delivery, the role holder will play a key leadership role within Research and Innovation Services (RIS), managing research-related financial issues and providing support and guidance to the Head of Research Delivery and the Executive Director.

The role holder will oversee the financial management of research projects from award through interim reporting and claims, external audit and receipt of final payment within strict deadlines and ensuring compliance with funding bodies, external agencies and University regulations.

The role will involve the development of relevant policies, standard operating procedures, tools and training to support the embedding of expertise in Research and Innovation Services and academic departments.

The role holder will work alongside the Research Delivery Manager (Project Support), to provide leadership and line management to the Research Delivery Team.

ABOUT THE TEAM

Research and Innovation Services (RIS) provides dedicated, specialist support to Northumbria's research community throughout the research grant lifecycle to help sustain Northumbria's position as a research-intensive modern university.

Support includes sourcing potential funding; aiding proposal development; providing guidance through the authorisation process; monitoring and managing project spend; and coordinating the final report and claim.

The Research Delivery Team provides financial management, guidance and support for externally funded research, consultancy and CPD projects. The team provide dedicated support for Principal Investigators (PIs) throughout the project lifetime. This includes: creating project accounts for each grant; managing the finances of projects within funder and University guidelines; providing updates on expenditure, forecasted future spending and income received; compiling claims and supporting internal and external audits. The team also liaises with Legal Services to assist with collaboration agreements and contracts for projects.

ABOUT YOU

To be successful in the role you will have:

  • Excellent knowledge of the regulatory and compliance landscape applying to research and innovation funding
  • A strong understanding of budgetary control processes, budget management, forecasting, month- and year-end processes
  • Proven and demonstrable technical financial skills, including project accounting, budgetary control and financial planning
  • Experience in a Higher Education research finance role or similar environment
  • Proven people management experience
  • Educated to degree level (or equivalent experience
