Regional Tactical Maintenance and Investment Manager - Water Supply

As we look to further develop our maintenance and investment activities in Water Supply we have a great new opportunity for a knowledgeable and dynamic Regional Tactical Maintenance and Investment Manager.
What you'll do

In this exciting new role, your function will be the lead on operational maintenance activities on our treatment and network assets, including electrical, mechanical and instrumentation activities and general asset maintenance.

You will also take ownership of our tactical investment choices and work effectively to support operational managers across Water Supply.

You will have overall responsibility for ensuring the attainment of maintenance requirements for all our water treatment centres and some of our network-related sub-assets, effectively contributing to maintaining supplies and protecting water quality.

Health and safety, budgetary and technical performance will be central to the role, as will the introduction of a continuous improvement ethos on reducing operational risk and costs and reducing reactive work wherever possible.

You will lead a team to implement cyclic maintenance programmes to ensure the correct balance of asset life and the performance of critical assets, managing the whole life cycle of assets and delivering improvement programmes where required.

You will also focus on ensuring the right skill sets are in place for EM&I and asset-related activities, exploring opportunities for improvement and better working, developing our people to ensure our performance is sustainable and creating an environment that allows our people to reach their full potential.

Being the visible lead for Water Supply on EM&I and tactical asset investment you will be required to develop and implement a strategic plan to ensure:

  • availability of a robust 24/7 EM&I service
  • operational activities are effectively delivering key performance indicator (KPI) and service level agreement (SLA) targets
  • compliance with tightening performance commitments with the DWI and EA
  • delivery within a constrained financial environment
  • staff development to ensure our performance is sustainable while creating an environment that allows staff to reach their potential
  • owning technical standards and specifications for the directorate.

What you'll need

You will be degree-qualified with at least 10 years of experience in water supply asset maintenance and investment and/or have a strong science or environment-related background. You will also have significant leadership experience at a senior level.

In addition, you will need:

  • a strong and proven technical knowledge of water supply including both treatment and network-related assets
  • working knowledge of water science and water quality parameters, including specific treatment processes that deal with turbidity, nitrates, pesticides, crypto, etc
  • an advanced level of understanding and competence in water treatment systems, including EM&I infrastructure, telemetry, water quality monitoring and PLCs
  • experience in capital maintenance delivery
  • experience in managing budgets and asset management frameworks
  • a proven track record of managing water supply operational emergencies both tactical and operational
  • significant communication and presentation skills
  • the ability to think both strategically and tactically, switching between modes at will and remaining flexible in operation and direction as situations develop
  • to be supportive of direct reports following BEST and foster a culture of innovation and autonomous operation
  • a clear understanding of the relevant regulatory framework and targets
  • excellent health and safety-related credentials, ideally including a NEBOSH qualification or equivalent.
