The Rutherford Appleton Laboratory is home to one of the world's leading research facilities, the ISIS neutron spallation source. ISIS uses neutrons to probe the structure of matter to the atomic level. Our scientists carry out 1000s of experiments every year on samples from simple and complex compounds to new alloys, to superconducting materials, to pharmaceuticals and biological samples. The work at ISIS also includes testing engineering fabrication and new engineering materials, as well as the effects of radiation on electronics.

The ISIS Electrical and Electronic User Support Group (EEUSG) is offering an exciting opportunity to lead our Project Development section. This team already enjoys success with a diverse portfolio of electronic & electrical projects that support the work of our scientists. This sections work plays a key role in the success of all experiments carried out at ISIS.

About youYou will have a background in electronic/electrical system development and be keen to build on your managerial and leadership skills. You will have gained experience of leading teams and engineers within an electronic workshop environment, and you will have a keen interest in research & development projects.

Responsibilities and opportunities include:

• Technical supervision and leadership of the Project Development Section.
• Overseeing the section's project management workflow and ensuring the work of the section adheres to the principles set out in the ISIS Project Management Framework.
• Taking part in project design reviews with customers and stakeholders.
• Leading your own technical projects, thus strengthening your technical skill base.
• Presenting clear and informative feedback on the status of the section's project work at progress meetings.
• Showcasing the work of the section at conferences and workshops both in the UK and internationally. (Travel to conference and workshops, in the UK and overseas, is fully supported and encouraged).
• Overseeing all training and personal development of the Project Development Section staff, including our graduate and apprentice placement students.
• Providing guidance on all health and safety matters within the workplace.

Person Specification
The following criteria will be assessed at shortlisting (S), interview (I), or both (S&I)

  • Qualified to degree level, or equivalent, in Electronics or Electronics & Electrical Engineering or have significant experience in electronics/electrical work (S)
  • Be able to describe individual and team contributions to electronic/electrical projects that show a high level of technical abilities and achievements (S&I)
  • Will have gained leadership and management experience of an electronics/electrical team (S&I)
  • Will have project management experience and be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of project management practices (S&I)
  • Will have an appreciation of safety in the workplace and the common practices employed to ensure the well-being of staff (I)
