About the role

Base Location: Flexible, Central Southern England | We're proud to offer a Flexible First approach to work, and this role is no exception. We will, however, need your base 'home' location to be one of our SSEN offices or depots around Central Southern England.

Salary: £73,728 - £85,633 + car allowance + a range of benefits to support your finances, wellbeing and family.

Operations are responsible for keeping the lights on; we are at the front line on the Network. If we find a fault, it is our responsibility to respond to the fault, and dispatch our skilled teams to fix it as quickly as possible. We work in all hours, and through all weathers, ensuring our customers are never without power. Our Technical Services Team is responsible for the provision of Operational Technology providing Design and Operational Services for Protection and Control Systems, Real Time Systems & increasingly, Telecommunications System across the Distribution network ensuring our network operates safely and reliably and continues to develop in order to meet the needs of our future network.

As a Protection and Control Field Manager, you will:

  • promote and manage operational safety across the Distribution network. This will include the development of safe systems of work and identifying / developing how Protection schemes can assist in network safety. You will be responsible for ensuring that protection schemes are commissioned correctly, reviewing the safety, quality and effectiveness of contractors where necessary.
  • manage a team of highly technical field engineers and providing a service to operational teams. You will manage the day-to-day operations of the network from a protection point of view, ensuring it operates safely and effectively. You will ensure plant and equipment operability, providing guidance and advice to faults and defects. You will manage network defects and faults and ensure all plant and equipment information is recorded and added to the SSEN asset database.
  • have overall management of staff carrying out design, engineering and commissioning. This includes day to day management and mentoring. You will also provide expert advice, guidance and analysis on operational matters within your sphere of expertise.
  • interact with trade bodies, National Grid ESO, contractors, manufacturers and other key partners in the supply chain. You will also work closely with other business units and directorates across the SSEN Distribution business.
  • play a key part in helping to shape future strategy in the specialist areas of Protection & Control, working closely with the policy teams and Technical Authorities. You will ensure you keep up to date with changes in technology and specifications and help to shape the scope and design of systems used for the management of Distribution Networks.

What do I need?

To be considered for this role, we would love you to have:

- A degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent) with significant industry experience in a utility / engineering environment.

- Detailed operational knowledge of the technical and safety requirements of an electricity network including outage management with expert technical knowledge in the fields of Protection & Control.

- In depth knowledge of statutory, regulatory and licenced requirements.

- Excellent analytical and technical skills to be able to review, understand and overcome technical performance issues and find engineering solutions.

- The ability to prioritise your workload in an organised and methodical manner in order to meet targets and deadlines.

You'll be an excellent communicator as you will be communicating at all levels on a range of technical subjects. This includes the ability to form structured and reasoned justification in your guidance and support to others, along with the ability to write clear and well-structured technical reports.
