This senior position is in Programme and Contract Management (PCM) and manages team members who project manage the delivery of exciting, innovative projects, including studies and schemes that ultimately aim to reduce the risk of flooding to communities and enhance the environment.

The role holder could be responsible for line managing a technical team, recruitment, including resource planning, onboarding new staff, and inductions, training, coaching, and mentoring, programme managing a portfolio of work as Area Lead, and troubleshooting and escalating project issues that project teams cannot resolve themselves.

You will be able to build a great working environment to bring out the best in high-performing teams. You will encourage your team to work collaboratively and effectively with their customers and partners. You will support your team with project, contract, and risk management decisions. You will organise and provide training for new starters and existing team members.

You'll use your interpersonal skills to build and develop a resilient working network with other team leaders, facilitating smooth working for your team's projects. You will oversee a portion of the programme, your portfolio and track performance, taking measures to rectify as and when needed.
Responding to incidents is a central part of our work. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment, and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you in your incident role.

The team

The Southeast PCM hub has approximately 90 Project Managers who directly report to one of the Project Team Managers (PTM). PTMs each manage 8-15 Project Executives, Project Managers and Project Support Officers. They work day-to-day on the delivery of projects within our flood and coastal erosion risk management programme using our framework suppliers. Other internal roles forming part of our integrated delivery teams include commercial, environmental, asset managers, financial, estates, and legal.

Experience/skills required

A degree (or equivalent) in an engineering, environmental, or geography-related discipline, ideally with chartered membership of a professional body such as APMP, CIWEM, ICE, or a management institute.

Have undertaken training in project, contract, HR or business management.

Some technical knowledge would be useful in managing a technical team that will oversee the delivery of hydrology, river modelling, feasibility assessment, asset management, business case development, cost monitoring/forecasting, scope preparation, CDM, engineering design, and construction.

Significant experience in a project, contract, and/or people management environment. An engineering, construction, and/or flood and coastal risk management background is desirable but not essential.

A track record for delivering results in technically challenging projects through the coordination of a technical team will need to be demonstrated.

The ability to mentor and support your teams in delivering their work.

Strong interpersonal and influencing skills in relationship management of internal and external stakeholders.

This role is based at West Malling, Romsey, or Worthing. It will require travel to project sites and team meetings in offices, and overnight stays may be necessary.
