Project Manager - Northumberland Line Rail Upgrade (6-Month Contract)

  • Various sites along the Northumberland Line, North East England.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the delivery of both P-Way (permanent way) and building/construction packages on the Northumberland Line upgrade.
  • Develop and manage detailed project plans, ensuring works are delivered on time, within scope, and budget.
  • Coordinate with multiple stakeholders including Network Rail, main contractors, subcontractors, local authorities, and client representatives.
  • Oversee site activities, ensuring compliance with Network Rail standards, health & safety regulations, and quality specifications.
  • Manage and report on project progress, risks, resource requirements, and financial performance.
  • Supervise day-to-day site management, including supervision of P-Way works (track renewals, adjustments) and building works (station refurbishments, new structures).
  • Ensure integration of M&E elements where required (lighting, power, station systems) and liaise with specialist contractors.
  • Prepare and review key documentation including method statements, risk assessments, work package plans, and handover packs.

Essential Qualifications & Certifications

  • SMSTS (Site Management Safety Training Scheme) or equivalent recognized site management qualification.
  • PTS (Personal Track Safety) certification - valid or willingness to renew prior to start.
  • Full UK driving license.

Experience & Skills Required

  • Strong experience as a Project Manager on rail infrastructure projects, ideally on Network Rail frameworks or similar.
  • Proven track record delivering both track (P-Way) and building packages.
  • Solid understanding of railway standards, health & safety, CDM regulations, and quality assurance processes.
  • Demonstrable experience planning, coordinating, and managing multidisciplinary teams on rail projects.
  • Ability to engage with subcontractors, design teams, and clients professionally.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • M&E experience (mechanical & electrical) - highly desirable, especially exposure to station systems, lighting, or electrical installations.

Desirable Extras

  • Knowledge of North East rail network or experience on similar regional upgrade schemes.
  • Familiarity with rail-specific software tools (e.g., Primavera P6, Bentley Rail Track, etc.).
  • First Aid certification.

Working Hours & Conditions

  • Monday to Friday (core hours), with flexibility for weekend/night work as required by possessions or critical path activities.
  • Predominantly site-based role along the Northumberland Line, with occasional travel to project offices or supplier locations.

Salary & Package

  • Competitive daily rate, paid via PAYE, umbrella, or Ltd company (as per IR35 compliance).
  • Business mileage reimbursed as per company policy.
  • PPE and site induction provided.

  • Must pass Network Rail-standard drug & alcohol testing.
