We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Project Manager. There is flexibility where the role can be based either at our Crewe site or Doncaster site.

Main Purpose of the Role

Working as part of the Programme Management Team and the wider Commercial Team, the Project Manager (PjM) will be accountable for the execution and day to day management of business critical complex NEC4 Infrastructure projects (eg. HS2, SID) in the Rail sector. Accountable for making daily decisions on the project parameters, processes and project execution to ensure project successful delivery. The PjM will work alongside the customers PjM in accordance with the NEC4 Engineering & Construction Contract and is responsible for indirectly managing cross-functional colleagues from across the business to ensure the successful delivery of the project, on-time, on-schedule and on-quality. This will require effective influencing skills to engage the right people, in the right way, at the right time. The PjM will be delivering products and solutions in a highly regulated environment and is expected to critically drive projects over the line in a consistent manner in accordance with the Programme & Project Management governance processes ensuring both the customer's needs and Unipart Rail's targets for sales, profit and growth are met. Principally focused in the UK Rail markets, this position will require both local and international travel, sometimes at short notice, as and when required.

The post holder will be making daily decisions on the project parameters, processes and project execution to ensure project successful delivery. This role will be accountable for the following activities:

  • Oversee the introduction and implementation of infrastructure products and solutions to Unipart Rail key customers and includes the development/roll-out of new and/or existing products/solutions with particular focus on schedule adherence, cost adherence, quality delivery, tracking and reporting, risks & issue management, cost management and change management in accordance with best practice Project Management.
  • Provide assurance against the Programme Management & Products Development processes

The role will require independent decision making within the parameters of the project plan as directed by the site General Manager and the Head of Programme and Project Management. Use of the Unipart Way and the Programme and Project Management Governance processes is expected. As a key role within the business, the role will require interface with senior colleagues up to Director level to manage the project delivery. You will be required to act with little supervision, however will be supported through your direct line manager and peers as required.

Spread Of Skills & Analysis Required

The nature of the role is varied and complex with a requirement for professional project management expertise, customer and market knowledge, alongside subject matter/ technical appreciation of product development. It requires a level of operational, commercial and financial acumen to assess project performance. The ability to nurture and develop relationships will be key to success. Management of distributed product development and OEM product development experience would be useful. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential.

Pressure & Working Environment

The role requires considerable concentration, dealing with complex project plans, costs and resources whilst dealing with a multitude of stakeholders and multiple competing priorities at any one time. A level of resilience will be required in developing relationships with internal and external stakeholders, particularly during challenging periods. A consistently high level of quality of work is required to ensure right first-time approach and to maximise business profitability. The role is UK based with a requirement to travel to suit the needs of specific projects, this may involve international travel.

Qualifications & Education

Degree qualified in either; Project Management, Engineering, or similar

Formal professional Project Management qualification is required (PMI, APM)

Experience & Proven Ability Required

Essential Criteria

  • Experience in administering NEC ECC forms of contract in an equivalent role
  • Significant experience and years served in project management
  • Capability in programme management planning tools and techniques
  • Customer focused, team orientated, determined, accountable and results driven
  • Self-starter who identifies and takes ownership of problems and implements solutions
  • Can-do and problem-solving attitude
  • Skilled in people management
  • Ability to drive progress across multiple teams
  • Effective networking and influencing skills
  • Proven experience in gaining product approval in rail or another regulated sector
  • Understanding of risk, issue and opportunity management
  • Application of the highest ethical standards in all dealings and transactions
  • IT literate with good knowledge of Microsoft & Google software packages
  • Excellent communication/ interpersonal skills
  • Strong team player
  • Communicate well within a team and be able to negotiate in a multi-disciplinary environment.
  • Manages time to ensure delivery to customer deadlines
  • Valid Driving Licence

Desirable Criteria

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Project (MSP) or equivalent
  • Knowledge of the rail industry and Engineering
  • Appropriate level of CSCS Card or NEBOSH
