Your New role

Are you a dynamic and driven Project Manager looking for your next challenging role? National Highways have an exciting opportunity for a Project Manager to join the Major Projects (MP) directorate in our Road Investment Strategy 3 (RIS3) pipeline team. This role can be based at either our Manchester or Birmingham offices, and will be hybrid mix of Office, site and home working.

Within this role, you'll be a major part of the planning and delivery of a group of exciting projects, and you will help shape the future delivery process, working with our delivery supply chain. You will also help shape the direction of National Highways whilst working as part of the regional leadership team. Further to this you will lead and coach other more junior Project Management individuals ensuring effective performance and delivery.

What you'll be leading on

  • Develop and maintain strong collaborative relationships with the Programme Managers, Senior Project Managers, and other key internal and external stakeholders, to ensure full mutual understanding of your projects' strategic and delivery objectives, to report on and review project performance, and to agree solutions that resolve complex issues.
  • Design, agree and implement project plans. Ensure that all activities are appropriately organised to deliver project objectives, and appropriately resourced to deliver the required outcomes.
  • Management of project budget, schedule, risk and outputs, against identified baseline budgets and schedule, whilst supporting the delivery of National Highways performance indices.
  • Oversee feasibility, design, and assessment work for proposed projects, to inform the development of business cases and investment proposals.
  • Contribute to the development of robust business cases, to clarify business benefits, quantify resource requirements and identify project interdependencies.
  • Identify and evaluate emerging risks, issues, dependencies and constraints associated with the project, escalating where appropriate. Where necessary develop, agree and implement solutions to overcome these.
  • Commission and manage the performance of delivery partners and expert consultancy support as appropriate, ensuring that project objectives and requirements are clearly understood, setting clear expectations for health and safety management, time and cost; and taking appropriate remedial action where necessary.

To be successful you'll need

  • Experience of successfully delivering complex, medium/high risk or high-profile capital programmes and/or projects.
  • Experience of managing complex relationships with multiple stakeholders and evidence of skills to influence relationships for positive outcomes.
  • Experience of managing and maintaining agreed plans and detailed stage plans in conjunction with delivery partners.
  • Commercial skills with proven ability to negotiate and manage contracts to deliver outcomes and drive value for money.
  • Demonstrate experience as mentor and/or coach to develop project management talent, skills and competence within a complex project environment.
  • Be a member of APM (Association for Project Management) or appropriate professional body for their specialist field or a willingness and commitment to attain
