Your new role

Have you previously led the successful delivery of a programme of complex projects, and/or high-profile construction related programmes? Are you looking for your next challenge within Programme Management? National Highways have several exciting opportunities on the Major Projects team leading packages on our Northern portfolio, including our A66 Northern Trans-Pennine Project in Penrith. Our offices are in Leeds, Manchester and Penrith.

Within this role you will be required to act as a Programme Manager on a number of multi-million pound projects whether in design, development or construction. As the Programme Manager, you will be managing and building relationships with complex stakeholder including those with government agencies, local authorities and local communities, and ensuring the performance of project teams, external contractors and consultants. You will ensure adherence to planning requirements, governance, quality assurance, health and safety, technical and specialist standards across the supply chain and National Highways, to ensure successful delivery of agreed project outcomes and acting in line with mandatory and delegated responsibilities.

What you'll be leading on

  • Continuous improvement of health and safety performance and wellbeing within your team and the delivery of key performance indicators (as a minimum) for health and safety of the relevant programme or project.
  • Development and maintenance of effective relationships with key internal and external stakeholders to ensure alignment with the programme's strategic and delivery objectives.
  • Leadership, management, and resourcing of your team to enable effective programme performance through capacity and capability, including support of individual personal development.
  • Delivery of the programme in accordance with the governance requirements of National Highways and the Major Projects division. In collaboration with the Project Sponsor, ensure that the appropriate approvals are granted, value for money is delivered and project benefits are realised.
  • Maintain compliance with the National Highways Portfolio, Programme and Project Management System (P3MS), clarifying roles and responsibilities within your team, and maintaining high standards for baseline management, the production of timely and accurate reports, and for creating and maintaining records.

To be successful you'll need

  • Extensive experience of leading people and teams to successful delivery of a programme of complex, high risk projects, and/or high-profile change programmes.
  • An extensive track record of managing complex relationships with multiple stakeholders and evidence of skills to influence relationships for positive outcomes.
  • To demonstrate experience of building collaborative teams as mentor and/or coach to develop project management talent, skills and competence within a complex project environment.
  • Experience operating within complex matrix organisations as well as collaboratively with third party delivery suppliers.
  • Strong evidence of commercial skills with proven ability to negotiate and manage NEC contracts to deliver outcomes and drive value for money.
