Transmission and Distribution

We have a tremendously challenging programme in front of us in the run-up to achieving 2030 net zero targets. New overhead lines, underground cables, substations, battery storage and subsea links are all needed - and quickly. AECOM Transmission and Distribution is currently supporting the network development which will underpin grid modernisation. Location

Our UK&I T&D team is spread across Bristol, Birmingham, Manchester, and Glasgow. If you are not located near a main office, we will consider a remote-working arrangement.

Job Description

What your new role will entail:

We are recruiting for a Principal/Associate Director Protection & Control Engineer to join our growing electricity Transmission & Distribution team.The focus of the team is large-scale HV grid infrastructure, grid connections, and private networks, particularly in projects where renewable energy, resilience, energy efficiency, and carbon reduction can support global efforts to combat climate change. The team delivers management, FEED design of electrical power projects at transmission voltages ranging from 132kV to 400kV. The role requires P&C engineering knowledge and skills, with proven experience in the design and specification (including calculation of settings) of equipment used in electrical networks and renewable generation.

You will need to have strong experience in working with transmission voltages 275kV/400kV and will probably have a consulting, utility, renewable generation or OEM background.

The Transmission & Distribution (T&D) Engineering team provides a range of services from the initial concept through High Voltage Power Systems Analysis, Cabling, Substations, Transmission and Distribution Infrastructure, System Balancing and Compensation, Protection Systems, SCADA, Communications, Converter Station Design, HVDC Systems and Interconnectors including overseas links.

We provide development, design, maintenance and project management for all services and comply with client and other stakeholder's quality, technical, commercial, safety and environmental requirements.

The work typically comes from:

  • Large projects and frameworks with transmission network operators mostly in UK.
  • Client and owners engineer role on construction of HV infrastructure.
  • Connections of renewable generation and hyperscale data centres.
  • Internal AECOM clients delivering large industrial and electrification projects.

Working to modernise the UK's Energy Infrastructure

AECOM has been recently appointed to provide design and consenting services for the UK's National Grid's Great Grid Program, in a joint venture with Arup. This £9bn initiative aims to enhance the electricity transmission network, ensuring integration of renewable energy sources, including offshore wind farms, into the grid by 2030, which will also support future projects beyond 2030. The project focuses on upgrading infrastructure to meet future energy demands, reduce fossil fuel dependency, and support the UK's net zero emissions target.

Qualifications

Here's what we will need from you:

  • An electrical/electronic/power engineering or similar qualification, such as an HNC, HND, BSc/BEng and/or an MSc/Meng.
  • Knowledge of transmission (National Grid or SSE) HV design process and related project experience.
  • Extensive experience (app. 8 years) in P&C FEED or detailed design of high voltage installations (132kV to 400kV).
  • Experience designing the HV infrastructure across the full project lifecycle from feasibility to detailed design.
  • Good team player and have a client-focused mindset customer facing skills.
  • Ability to work flexibly across multiple projects.

Technical expertise:

  • Project Development/Pre-construction: Development of optimum P&C solutions for the various Transmission & Distribution clients. Development of specifications with technology-specific specialists and external project partners. Tender evaluations. Technical assessment and Design Assurance Design input to consenting team, converter, civil, and marine. Participate in design meetings.
  • Tender: Tender specification development. Design assurance of tender return documentation. Design assurance during tender evaluation. Supplier meetings.
  • Construction: Design Assurance - Reviewing supplier technical designs. Manufacturing assurance audits that manufacturing is following technical design, attending FAT. Commissioning support - Fault resolution support.
