Job overview

We are seeking an inspiring and dynamic pharmacist to join our senior pharmacy management team as the Pharmacist Team Manager for Adult and Elderly Inpatient Mental Health Services in Mid and South Essex. The role will lead on the robust provision of medicines management expertise to adult and elderly inpatient and urgent care services. These posts would suit experienced pharmacy service managers with uncompromising standards who will strive to make a deep footprint on quality of care we provide to our patients. The post is based in Chelmsford, with responsibility for Mid and South Essex Inpatient and Urgent Care Services. The post holder will be expected to work seamlessly with the other role covering North and West Essex to provide exemplary clinical leadership across the whole of Essex.

As the service leads the posts direct the whole pharmacy inpatient mental health service on a day-to-day basis. They will be highly visible on wards in actively modelling best practice to and coaching our ward teams to ensure that our patients consistently receive the best pharmaceutical care. Working with our senior departmental team of specialists and within the wider Trust, you will set the professional standard and develop our pharmacy team members to achieve their best, and make the transition to the next level of their careers. The role is full time (37.5 hours per week), including participation in on-call, weekend, early, late and Bank Holiday rotas, as necessary.

You should have a Master's Degree in Pharmacy or equivalent, be registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council and be able to demonstrate evidence of postgraduate training and continuing professional development in clinical pharmacy practice. Whilst ideally this would be in mental health, this post is first and foremost about operational delivery of Great Care - your transferrable skills means you will have what it takes to do what it takes. Experience in mentoring and line managing teams with energy and enthusiasm are vital ingredients, and anyone with a track record of similar in a non-specialist trust is encouraged to apply.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • The role requires a competent professional with the clinical, leadership and managerial skills needed to manage the pharmacy services for inpatient and urgent care mental health services.
  • The post-holder will provide professional leadership and management for mental health services and work collaboratively, as part of the Trust's pharmacy senior management team, to ensure that service needs are met across all geographic and functional areas of mental health services. They will work with clinical and operational leaders outside the department in their specific area of clinical and/or operational practice.
  • The post-holder will support the Director of Pharmacy and Deputy Chief Pharmacists in the delivery of the vision and priorities for the pharmacy department and work alongside colleagues to ensure patient centred services are provided by a competent and flexible pharmacy workforce. They will have both a clinical role and participate in operational and corporate activities at a local and trust-wide level, including leading on specific issues across the Trust.
  • To actively contribute to, and participate in, the provision and development of pharmaceutical services within the Essex Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust, as part of the Trust's pharmacy and medicines management team.
  • To organise and manage the activities of pharmacy staff providing services to clinical teams within inpatient and urgent care mental health services, and act as the first point of contact with operational management for these services. Act as a role model for the clinical pharmacy team and support management, development, supervision and training of staff.
  • To take responsibility for the development of services provided to specified areas of the Trust.
  • To provide clinical pharmacy advice on the management of patients with mental illness in order to maximise benefit and minimise risk in relation to medicines.
  • To participate as an active member of specific ward / unit / clinical teams, and support the safe and effective use of medicines.
  • To deputise for the Deputy Chief Pharmacist or Director of Pharmacy as required.
  • To lead the development and delivery of trust-wide initiatives and projects relating to medicines management as requested by the Deputy Chief Pharmacist or Director of Pharmacy.
  • To work collaboratively with pharmacy colleagues to ensure that the needs of the organisation can be met
  • To support and participate in clinical audit.

Person specification

Education and Qualification

Essential criteria

  • Current and continued registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council as practicing member
  • Postgraduate Diploma in relevant area of pharmacy practice, or willingness to work towards
  • Member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society and a member or willing to work towards Faculty membership
  • Member of the College of Mental Health Pharmacy

Desirable criteria

  • Qualification as an independent Non-Medical Prescriber, or willingness to work towards.
  • Certificate in Management studies or equivalent management experience

Knowledge

Essential criteria

  • Excellent interpersonal, influencing and negotiating skills including effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to critically evaluate clinical material and disseminate findings to others. Demonstrate an advanced level of clinical knowledge and skills
  • Able to identify own training needs and those of others. Evidence of Continuing Professional Development
  • Proficient IT skills, e.g. ability to use Microsoft Office applications, internet etc.

Desirable criteria

  • Tutoring and training skills and experience of planning and delivering training
  • Evidence of writing procedures, guidelines and protocols

  • Significant post-registration clinical pharmacy experience
  • Experience of providing relevant pharmacy services within a mental health / learning disability setting
  • Experience of working as a member of a multi-disciplinary team

  • Experience of participating in multi-disciplinary research
