Job Title: Trainee Patent Attorney

Location: Frimley. We offer a range of hybrid and flexible working arrangements – please speak to your recruiter about the options for this particular role.

Salary: £40,000 + depending on experience

What you’ll be doing:

  • Supporting the Patent Attorney’s / Heads of Patents and wider Patent team, working under some supervision where necessary, on patent matters including drafting, prosecution and portfolio management actions
  • Promoting IP awareness within selected areas of the business, and particularly amongst those in the business responsible for research and development work
  • Building effective relationships at all levels within the business so as to become an integral and essential part of the business’ value proposition
  • Working with all members of the Patent Team to develop wide experience of patent work to build core patent attorney skills
  • Progressing towards qualification as a Chartered and European Patent Attorney
  • Rapid progression in developing relevant core legal skills

Your skills and experiences:

  • Possess a good technical degree or have equivalent science or engineering experience and demonstrate technical skill across the range of technology relevant to BAE Systems’ patent portfolio
  • Working, or willing to work towards, certification relevant to Legal specialism (e.g. IP – Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys (CIPA))
  • Possess a technical degree (STEM)
  • Demonstrate technical skills across a range of technology relevant to BAE Systems’ patent portfolio
  • Working, or willing to work towards, the relevant UK (CPA) and the European (EPA) qualifications
  • Excellent written communication skills to convey relevant patent concepts to customers and to enthuse the technical community to drive collaboration
  • Proactive approach to solving problems, working with the wider team to develop solutions
  • Good negotiation, influencing and drafting skills

The Legal team:

You will work with a variety of key stakeholders internally across BAE Systems and work closely with patent attorneys, effectively engaging with Functions & Lines of Business (LOB) to assist in the management of their intellectual assets. You will be passionate about working within the legal team and have a passion for IP. This is an excellent development opportunity which will allow you to work towards qualifying as a Chartered and European Patent Attorney.
