Job overview

The cardiac PICU (CPICU) has around 400- 450 admissions per year including those who are referred for ECMO support (cardiac and respiratory). The intensive care team is an integral part of wider East Midlands Congenital Heart Centre (EMCHC).

The General Children's Intensive Care Unit (CICU) has around 400 admissions per year. The CICU supports various specialities including paediatric surgery, respiratory, gastroenterology, neurology, hemato-oncology, Paediatric ENT etc. It is a part of Leicester Children's Hospital.

Leicester is commissioned for offering both respiratory and cardiac ECMO support; it is the only centre providing paediatric and neonatal ECMO transport and is one of the busiest ECMO centres in the country.

The University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust hosts the regional transport service CoMET which is based at the Midlands Critical Care Transport Hub at Castle Donnington. This new facility has the state of art simulation centre with an immersive sim suite.

Main duties of the job
• At Leicester we plan to offer a tailor made post CCT fellowship to cater to the training needs of senior fellows. They will have an opportunity to develop special interest in cardiac intensive care & ECMO.
• They will get opportunities to do fellow of the week on general and cardiac intensive care. We would offer opportunity for doing supported on calls on general PICU, Cardiac PICU, and Comet transport.
• Senior trainees will be offered opportunity to take on long term PICU patients with consultant support.
• We have a group of consultants with an interest in POCUS, advanced US guided vascular access with expertise in doing tunnelled PICC lines on the unit.
• Mentorship program with one to one support from senior PICU and ECMO consultants.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The paediatric critical care services at Leicester are located at Leicester Royal Infirmary. This includes a 12 bedded cardiac paediatric intensive care unit (CPICU), 7 bedded children's intensive care unit (CICU) and 12 bedded HDU/ Paediatric respiratory long term ward (ward 12) which is located next to the children's intensive care unit.

The successful candidate will be working alongside the team of Paediatricians from a variety of specialities including acute and general paediatrics, paediatric intensive care and paediatric subspecialty medicine in the children's admission unit, children's inpatient wards and children's outpatient department. He/she will participate in managing the care of paediatric patients at registrar level. He/she will be expected to perform clinical and non-invasive assessment of paediatric patients within an acute environment. The post will include responsibility for day to day running of the paediatric base wards, planning and implementing management under the supervision of the consultant staff and presenting cases at departmental MDT meetings. The post will also involve working in paediatric outpatients under consultant supervision.

Essential criteria

  • MB BS or Equivalent
  • Full GMC Registration
  • MRCPCH Equivalent
  • Current APLS/NLS certification

Experience

Essential criteria

  • At least 1 year' experience in paediatric intensive care medicine at ST6+ level or equivalent
  • Appropriate clinical knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgment to problems; clear, logical thinking/analytical approach; understands evidence based practice
  • Airway skills, ability to perform ultrasound guided lines. Lead resuscitation for children of all ages

Desirable criteria

  • Membership of relevant Specialist Societies or Associations.
  • Previous ECMO centre experience

  • Ability to motivate and develop both medical Staff and non-medical staff

  • Commitment to further develop the post and the service provided

  • Awareness of Service Development issues

Disclosure and Barring Service Check

Please note if you are successful in obtaining this position and the post involves regulated activity you will be required to undertake a Disclosure & Barring Service check.

The Trust will pay for the check initially and the money will then be deducted from your salary over a three month period commencing on your first month's payment.

The current price of a check is £38 for an enhanced and £18 for a standard check.
