Salary: Starting Salary is £40,777 (Level one) rising to £44,075 'pro rata for part-time' Pay award pending

About the Role

We are recruiting one Operations Manager - Commercial Waste to lead and manage frontline commercial waste collection operations within a defined locality, while also supporting wider, citywide service delivery. The role focuses on providing strong, visible leadership to operational teams, driving service performance, productivity, and efficiency, and ensuring high standards of customer service, health and safety compliance, and environmental performance for our business customers. Working closely with Service Managers, Senior Operations Managers, and internal and external partners, the post holder will play a key role in delivering reliable, customer-focused commercial waste services that contribute to the city's environmental, economic, and sustainability objectives.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Essential qualifications
    • A full, clean UK driving licence.
    • Willingness to undertake relevant health and safety and management training as required.
  • Essential experience
    • Proven experience of managing large, diverse frontline teams within an operational service, ideally within waste, street cleansing, or a comparable environment.
    • Demonstrable experience of people management, including performance management, attendance management, recruitment, training identification, and conducting formal management processes.
    • Experience of delivering a responsive, customer-focused frontline service and handling challenging situations with members of the public in a calm and professional manner.
  • Essential knowledge
    • A sound understanding of health and safety legislation and its practical application within frontline operational services.
    • Knowledge of equality, diversity, and inclusion principles and the importance of embedding these into everyday management practice.
    • Awareness of environmental services, waste management, or street cleansing operations, including service standards and performance monitoring.
  • Essential skills and competencies
    • Strong, visible leadership skills with the ability to motivate, develop, and manage teams through change and service improvement.
    • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to engage effectively with colleagues, councillors, partners, and members of the public.
    • Strong organisational and problem-solving skills, with a solution-focused and flexible approach to managing competing priorities.
    • Confident IT skills, particularly across Microsoft 365 applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and Teams).
    • Ability and willingness to work irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, and bank holidays, when service requirements demand.
