Join us as our National Backhaul Manager as we continue to grow.

Wincanton Group Transport is responsible for the sub-contraction of over £100m of transport spend, spread across multiple sectors such as Retail, Grocery, General Merchandise, Construction and Industrial.

This function is moving from its current headquarters in Derby to a new be-spoke control tower in Nottingham. This follows on from the launch of our Ortec TMS and recent purchase of the EyeQ digital platform to support our continued growth. In line with our growth, we have an exciting opportunity for an experienced transport professional to join the control tower as a National Haulier Manager, reporting into our Group Head of Planning.

You will own the subcontract strategy for Group Transport and its implementation in line with the business direction and strategic objectives, including relationships and the development of a transport community, onboarding hauliers to new technologies, contracting lanes, increasing coverage and payment processes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Own and lead Group Transports haulier strategy and grow our community in line with it.
  • Lead the haulier management team.
  • Integrate hauliers into EyeQ and the digital marketplace.
  • Fully accountable for haulier delivery performance, compliance and health & safety management.
  • Manage regular reviews and ensure that relationships are grown and maintained.
  • Accountable for ensuring that haulier partners are paid on time and owning this process including pod management.
  • Track and Trace App Compliance.
  • Attend internal meetings representing Group Transport and weekly/monthly customer review meetings.
  • Grow strategic partners with a view to gaining visibility of external work banks.
  • Manage external subcontract performance, availability and opportunity.
  • Support with pricing and modelling of new business.
  • Work with the GM Planning & Sub-contraction to ensure the best route to market is used.
  • Price benchmarking and understanding of market rates and seasonal fluctuations.
  • Market trends, with seasonal and peak planning, ensuring we have subcon capacity to meet demand.

Note: Regular national travel with flexibility to stay away from home when required.

What will you bring to our team?

  • Full UK Driving Licence and ability to travel - minimum 30% travel required.
  • Excellent communicator and presenter, with experience in building relationships at all levels.
  • CPC and knowledge of current transport legislation, along with demonstrable knowledge of the UK haulage network.
  • Experienced TMS User, Ortec or Paragon, with knowledge in routing/optimisation.
  • Experience of using digital market places & digital apps.
  • Experience in retail and construction transport / haulier management.
  • Understanding of haulage costs and the market place.
  • Project management experience and ability to demonstrate principles and practises.
  • Analytical skills and experience of interpreting data and management information.
  • Self-starter and a Logical problem solver.
