Job description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a laboratory site manager position in the Monitoring Laboratories (ML) management team.

In this role you will lead, develop, and manage the performance of the National Fisheries Laboratory. This comprises eighteen laboratory and office spaces and twenty multidisciplinary staff specialising in fish disease diagnostics, national incident response, fish ageing and ecology, fishery monitoring and management, risk assessment, regulation, biosecurity, and non-native fish species.

The role line manages the NFL leadership group (six specialists and a technical team leader), working closely with technical leads and the team leader who manages the rest of team.

You will create an environment that allows the leadership and wider team to thrive, develop, and deliver a diverse range of work to their best ability.

You will lead and foster networks with internal and external partners, tackling priority risks and pressures, allowing the team to collaborate, influence and drive change for the benefit of fisheries and monitoring.

You will manage a service level agreement with the National Fisheries teams, working together to balance workloads, resolve challenges, and focus on delivery for area and national teams.

You will ensure the lab is compliant with health and safety, environmental, and quality legislation and standards, ensuring safe working practices, sustainability considerations, and delivery of sound evidence for decision making.

You will manage operational budgets along with a growing commercial income. You will undertake roles on a range of projects to develop our services and facilities.

As a member of the Monitoring Laboratories Management Team spanning the three laboratory sites, you will collaborate on cross cutting work across the other labs and the wider National Monitoring department.

At the Environment Agency we aspire for inclusivity to thrive in our workforce. We embrace equal opportunities and flexible work arrangements, ensuring everyone can contribute and succeed.

The team

The National Fisheries Laboratory is a dynamic, productive, and exciting place to work, leading the way in its field across a wide range of disciplines.

The lab has a remit to develop fisheries and protect the environment from risks associated with fish disease and non-native fish species. Their work directly informs the organisation's monitoring and regulation of fisheries.

The teams' vision is to "drive sustainable and resilient fisheries through our people, science, and innovation."

Experience/skills required

A proven track record of putting our people at the heart of everything you do and have a passion for developing people.

Excellent communicator at all levels, and in multiple forms with ability to lead, motivate, organise, resolve tension, and enhance cross-team working.

Strong team ethic with the ability to consider wider team pressures, workloads and risks.

Good organisational awareness and knowledge of the fisheries sector within it, including its core duties, stakeholders, and customers.

Good organisational and planning skills with the ability to prioritise and deliver results effectively under pressure and to strict timelines and standards.

Ability to take initiative, be flexible, solve problems, and make risk-based decisions.

Experience in working and building relationships with a variety of customers, partners and /or stakeholders.

It would also be preferable (but not essential) to have a knowledge of fish disease incidents, incident management, fisheries monitoring and associated regulatory frameworks and processes.

Contact and additional information

The role is based at the National Fisheries Laboratory in Brampton, Cambridgeshire, and does include occasional national travel. Working on the ground with your team is vital in this role so although some flexibility for hybrid working exists, we are looking for a person who can be based predominantly on site.

All EA employees are expected to participate in incident response and will receive relevant training. This may attract additional payments.

Interviews will be scheduled for the end of October/early November.
