Mentor

The way we support children and young people who are experiencing exploitation and extra-familial harm is changing and we are looking to recruit, train and place ex-members of HM Armed Forces, their spouses and partners and serving Armed Forces personnel to undertake the roles of Engagement Mentors within Lancashire's Contextual Safeguarding Service, Children's Social Care.

Based within a mutli-disciplinary team with social workers, support workers, substance misuse workers and youth workers amongst other partner agencies.

The role of an engagement mentor is to support children and young people open to the contextual safeguarding team, providing consistent support, guidance, and positive reinforcement to help children with antisocial behaviour develop the skills, self-awareness, and motivation to make positive changes in their behaviour and lead more fulfilling lives.

The mentor acts as a trusted adult who can build a supportive relationship with the child, helping them navigate challenges, develop social skills, and make positive changes in their behaviour.

Each Engagement Mentor receives a comprehensive training package which currently includes:

Effective Mentoring at Level 3

Safeguarding

(Please note: The full training package is under review and may vary)

Additional training specifically related to contextual safeguarding - exploitation and extra familial harm will be provided in addition to the above.

Placement in the teams is for one academic year. Our Engagement Mentors are paid an entry-level salary (calculated from LCC pay spine). The cost of the training package is met by the programme as is the cost of DBS clearance.

To be eligible to apply for a place on the programme candidates must have served or be the spouse or partner of someone who has served in any branch of the UK Armed Forces as evidenced by discharge certificate or ID Card, hold Level 2 (or equivalent) qualifications in English and Maths, and be skilled in the use of ICT. Experience of supporting children and young people within this field is also desirable. This is an Essential Car User Post.

In return Lancashire County Council offers a range of benefits, which can be found on LCC Vacancies website.

Please contact Lisa Sowden, Senior Manager on 01282 470963 for further discussion about this brand new, exciting role.

This is a Fixed-Term Post with training until 31/08/25. Interviews are planned for 14th - 15th Jan 2025.

Please ensure you have uploaded and attached your supporting statement to evidence how you meet the criteria for the role. The panel may be unable to shortlist you for interview without this evidence.

The post you are applying for is covered by the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (as amended in 2013). If successful you will be required to apply to the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) for a 'disclosure'. Further information can be found on the 'Our Recruitment Process' tab.

You will be required to provide a car for use in connection with the duties of this post and must be insured for business use. However, we may consider you if you cannot drive because of a disability.

We reserve the right to close down a vacancy early, before the closing date, if we receive sufficient applications.
